@PalmyrPar It was a setup to fail from day one, when they proceeded to make a pilot from incomplete source material. The Man Without Qualities ASOIAF is definitely not (I've read the five books at least six times)

GoT was showing serious cracks from abandoned plots across Seasons 3/4 that would’ve bitten it in the ass even if everything continued good in the short-term - however, Seasons 5-6 are actively dogshit on their own, and their great ratings proved that the audience was mostly clueless as a default, and didn’t mind the cracks becoming giant pits.

@TwinkTheory They're the best. When they rejoiced over Kristen getting fired in S3 I wanted them to get an Emmy

I've always liked this video because it's the best at showing the top and bottom of science are words, and directionally that feynman and Oppenheimer and von Braun and Einstein, all the big names, got to be big by words.

A BBC interviewer asked a Nobel physicist the simplest question in the world: why do two magnets push each other apart. He refused to answer it. What he did instead is the best seven minutes on thinking ever filmed. The man is Richard Feynman, at home in 1983, no blackboard, no notes, sitting in an armchair. He does not dodge because he cannot answer. He dodges because he wants you to see what the question is actually asking. So he takes an ordinary sentence, that a woman slipped on the ice and broke her hip, and starts asking why, and every answer opens another why, until the ground gives way. Then he turns it around on the interviewer with a question about ice that sounds trivial and is not. The point he arrives at is the uncomfortable one. Every explanation is only a translation into something you already accept without explanation. Magnets have no such translation. There is nothing more familiar than magnetism to reduce magnetism to, which is why every answer you were given at school was a picture, not a reason. It matters more now than it did in 1983. Any tool will hand you a fluent answer in a second. Knowing which questions actually have a bottom is the part that is still yours. One question. Seven minutes. It is in the video.

@tom_does_stuff_ @DrDavidVernon Once you read Florio you’ll barely recognize Montaigne … but you’ll definitely recognize Shakespeare. Some even think he or his dad wrote the Italian plays.

@TwinkTheory You saw similar heel turns on shows like Girls and Broad City as well once they got established in this time. It's interesting how the baselines shift when the initial premise was being poor and struggling

They rarely discuss their finances but I’ve read by this season they were pulling 25K an episode and you can tell. They’ve moved from injections to actual extensive plastic surgery. The apartments are bigger, the parties are more glamorous, they’re finally bathed in that unnatural la sunlight while indoors. You can tell therapy and pharmaceuticals are flowing. Increasingly it seems sort of Gatsby-esque, their laughter full of the sound of jingling coins. Maybe the over arching story of vanderpump is a Rome right before the fall narrative: decadent, glittering, but the rot has set in, the mold creeps down the corners.

'[T]he whale-fishery furnishes an asylum for many romantic, melancholy, and absent-minded young men, disgusted with the carking cares of earth, and seeking sentiment in tar and blubber.' (Melville, Moby-Dick) The summer isn't over yet. There's still time for a long, life-changing book. If you don't know what to read in August, you couldn't possibly go wrong with Moby-Dick.
