@Fogarty13Paul It's because the machines (and scanners for places without machines) which accept the empties need to read the barcode to issue a receipt. If a container is crushed it's very unlikely to be able to read the barde, whence the requirement. Re: litter, depends on the uptake!

@tom_gid Can someone explain why they won't accept "damaged" containers which presumably will be crushed for re-use? Does this mean a significant number of containers will remain as litter or unused?

Perhaps this might open the door to get them to recognise that to stop plastic being favoured over metal, we need a variable rate not a fixed rate DRS.

This latest development is unacceptable for the UK can industry. Excluding glass means:- 1) Cans made of infinitely recyclable alu face commercial disadvantage. 2) Consumers aren't getting consistent messages about recycling, hampering rest of scheme. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotla…
