@Tropicastalia Many of the people arrested engaging in the so-called “novo cangaço” were perfectly bourgeois. Within every small town orthodontist, every corner-desk notary public, lies a Genghis Khan…

@tavaresleo68410 Well, one could argue that the IPES core of the 1964 conspiracy (centered around Golbery) pulled off exactly what Tsuge attempts to do in the movie.

I first saw this on a VHS my dad brought back from Hong Kong. My grandfather; who lived through two coups in Brazil, as a young man in ’37 and later as a bureaucrat in ’64; was completely transfixed by Oshii’s depiction of a slow-motion coup d’état. “What is this cartoon?”

@oshiimid If you don’t like the original, the odds of you appreciating Atlantis are low… Though I’d still watch the first few episodes.

Truly objective opinion needed. That means no fanboys. I fixed a local's toaster and he was SO happy he gave me 5 seasons of Stargate Atlantis on DVD in trade. Now, I hated the series Stargate. Like really really did bore me to tears. The original movie I loved. It was great. Is Stargate Atlantis worth putting into my DVD player to check out? Or should I save myself the tedium I sorta expect?

@tom_m_b It collapsed 10 years ago. Something else took it over and used its skin. Now let's see if it survives a ground war in Asia (if it starts one)

If this becomes a ground war, we may be looking at the collapse of the modern GOP as a political party.

No other elite in history made such steep, radical course corrections when faced with unforeseen circumstances as Japan’s ruling class did. And not just once, but twice: first when Perry forced open their ports, and again when the US dismantled the Empire.
