This part. Slavery never really ended. It became Jim Crow, which became the criminalization and mass incarceration of Black people. But if there’s a whole holiday saying slavery ended and no education to the contrary, the whitewashing of systemic racism wins again.

I’m happy folk are happy but this is also very precarious. Mainstreaming Juneteenth means there’s now massive amt of inaccurate messaging—“it marks end of slavery”—and its very clear its being used to push a false idea of “progress” instead of a call to dismantle white supremacy

UPDATE: Chicago has released bodycam video of the police killing of 13-year-old #AdamToledo: ▪️ The video shows Adam had his hands up when police opened fire, killing him. ▪️ Cook County now says prosecutor made an error when they said Adam was holding a gun.

From my vantage point it sure looked like the police targeted legal observers and journalists for arrest.
The arrests were very calculated. You could see a supervisor huddle with a bunch of officers behind the line, point at people, and then they’d move to arrest.
