why doesn't Toby Fox simply pay someone to write the game so he has more time for translations, which are legitimately a deeper artform. he has more than enough fucking money so there's literally no excuse. just tell a friend the plot and they could just autopilot it

People really underestimate how hard it is to not just translate language, but also intent and the impact of the delivery. Eg. "I'm gonna kill myself" can be read as feeling POSITIVELY overwhelmed in English But it can never deliver the same way in different language
Jaerek@Jaereku

Unpopular take maybe? But the idea that art made within one culture MUST be made accessible to every other group is absurd and anti-art. I mean us Turkish speakers have even less translations than Hispanophones, yet I’ve never seen the equivalent of this meltdown in Turkey?

i feel like you guys dont understand that no matter how many experts you have explaining to you the thought process and reasonings for a translation, if you dont speak the language, theres always going to be a layer of uncertainty. he can only trust what they tell him
BADASS FUCKING SKELETON | Chiwykun@chiwykun

@StarkyTheSald Again just get a proffesional team gang "Oh he cant oversee the translation" Yes he can. Thats the whole point of a localization team, that they work 100% WITH the creator to localize his story and adapt it into different cultures.

A 19-year-old thinks he knows more about the origins of the furry fandom than someone who’s been in it for 27 years. Shut the fuck up. The fandom wasn’t built on LGBTQ propaganda, zoophilia, or public kink. Those elements flooded in later and actively ruined it for everyone else. Public kink exhibitionists and zoophiles turned conventions into spaces where minors and unwilling adults were exposed to sexual behavior without consent. If you’ve been around that long and still defend it, you’re 100% complicit in allowing exhibitionists to flaunt themselves in front of minors and people who wanted no part of it. I was there in 2015 at RainFurrest. The entire convention reeked of urine and feces, and diaper fetishists were leaving used diapers on people’s cars in the parking lot. That was the final straw for me. The fandom I joined no longer exists.
AspenDawgy@ValenceProto

@glitchchilla You can continue being confidently wrong, I’ve actually been in the fandom for years and seen how it actually operates, just because you think you know shit, doesn’t mean you should open your mouth ❤️

Of all the Toby Fox discourse, this is the one that really got me. This is truly the thing that defines the conflict. People who speak in native english are incapable of understanding what it's like to have most art NOT made for your native language. It's baffling to me.

Unironically starting to believe Fangamer and Toby are purposely shitting on LATAM

@Fangamer No fucking way you guys went out of your way to not include a close up of the shirts inside text that spells out "Made in Honduras" after people called you out on the incompetence of shipping shit to LatAm.

@tomfoolerycut @kijuler I'm not even from latin America and I'm supporting em. I know it's gonna be latam Spanish translation, I know people from latam will make fun of Spain if it does or doesn't get a translation and viceversa and I still think they have the right to ask and be mad, so they should

Not doing a translation is one thing. Fangamer making merch ultra expensive or even downright inaccessible in LATAM while they all have a tag that says "Made in Honduras" is downright despicable. Making merch in LATAM while making the merch inaccessible in LATAM is so shitty.

There is something interesting to note here with Toby Fox's lie in his response. The excuse he gave for the reason why there was only a Japanese version of Undertale localized in the first place is because he "actually know the language" and therefore, be more comfortable to work on it as it's conception. However, it could be verified that Toby hasn't properly started learning Japanese until the next year after the official Japanese localizion of Undertale has released (August 16, 2017), and has only able to be proficient enough in the language to help directly with the translation by the time he worked on Deltarune. With part of the process of the localization being officially stated: "Before Undertale's English release, Toby told me that he intended to release the game in Japanese sometime. He faced some big questions, though. How do you get a game translated and localized? And how do you ensure the final product is good if you don't even know the language yourself?" And for a tweet: "Even back when I was translating Undertale, I actually mistook Toby for someone who was already intimately familiar with Japanese...That's how committed to the Japanese version he was, it was quite amazing. (And now, in the space of only one year, he's already become "intimately familiar" with it, to the point it blew me away...)" Toby Fox is lying, most likely unintentionally, but it's still not exactly a white lie. The one excuse he has is faulty, and it leads to the truth of it seeming just out of favoritism. The personal interest that drove him to undertake that process for Japanese did not exist for other languages. This isn't bad in itself, but the excuse he uses frames him as more altruistic than what is actually the case. And this also disproves the notion that the process of localizing other language couldn't be done without prior fluency, since his own Japanese localization proves it is possible without prior fluency. Thai distinction wouldn't necessarily matter if it didn't make a difference, but that is tht opposite for the case. It puts him at a more favorable light even despite the actual logistic issues being valid for why he can't pursue it. It should be correct into the actual reason, I think, despite it being a less favorable framing because it locates the cause in his choices rather than in his circumstances, and it invites other overseas fans to ask why their community did not merit the same investment rather than accepting that the investment was simply never possible.
