Turns out, 40 years ago the guy had been one of the country’s biggest manufacturers and dealers of ecstasy...

Story behind the story: One day last year I was exploring a small Texas town where a wealthy tech guy had moved in and started fixing things up when someone told me I should meet this other guy who lived in a bus over by the old cotton gin, overlooking the river...

Outside in its heyday was one of the best magazines that ever existed. I'm proud I got to be part of that. It was thriving before the pandemic, and I firmly believe it would have thrived again post-pandemic if it had remained a stand-alone brand. What a waste.

As you may have heard, most (not all) of the people who produce Outside magazine (and the website) were laid off on Thursday. The ex-ME has a complete archive of issues going all the way back to the 1970s. If anybody knows of a library that might want to house these, lemme know.

@erenbali I don't know. It's pretty easy to argue that Tesla has been a net good for the world and Elon's ownership of Twitter has been the opposite.

My feed is just angry culture-war screeds, Elon’s pathetic descent, and a lot of ads and other promotional stuff. I might keep this account for the rare times I need it for work, but it’s time to say bye. What a sad, ugly place this has become.

I used to come to twitter to follow an ongoing conversation by smart and sometimes silly people who care a lot about a handful of subjects that I care about. Those conversations aren’t happening any more.
