35 years ago today, I attempted my first Channel swim, aged 11. It came off and I became a World Record holder. This Friday, a team from Deloitte will aim to swim to France and raise money for our #5MillionFutures charity Scope. Donate here #JustGiving justgiving.com/page/tom-grego…

Thanks @BBCRadio4 for another broadcast of #ABoyintheWater on Sounds today. It's a great adaptation and makes the story accessible to everyone, not just those who can buy and read books. And all in same week @leytonorientfc get promoted! Thank you 🙏bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b0…

@leytonorientfc commentary has now switched to a totally random match?!

@AvrilKinnerk @TeamEnglishIre @Team_English1 Hi Avril. I'd be happy to help for starters. I have plenty of material and talks that I do for young people so DM me and let's see what I can rustle up. Sorry late response... I rarely look at this place! Tom

@TeamEnglishIre @Team_English1 I'm about to embark on a study of the outstanding @tomgregory11 book "A Boy In The Water". Wondering if anyone has taught this before and could share some writing prompts/ resources from it?
English

@whisperingtwist That's the sort of write up one can only dream of. Thanks you so much. I've said it before on here, but it's a total thrill when that story from '88 'finds its gang'. Also reminds me of what felt like simpler times given current events. If I can do anything please just ask. TG

@tomgregory11 makes an important point describing the club being about equality of participation: “A swimming community where everyone arrived equal; swimming, being part of a team and sharing unity of purpose mattered more than money, the car your dad drove or qualifications”.
English

@sallygoble Yeah you bet. Thanks ever so much for all the kind things you said. I must say it's a real lift and just makes me gasp when I realise people actually read it / liked it! Amazing

@tomgregory11 Ah no I’d remember that I think. 🤔 I only ever swim at charlton in winter when London fields is too busy. Love it there though. Another time.
English

Oh goodness I’ve just finished Boy in the Water by @tomgregory11 - I’ve had it on my swimming bookshelf for ages. As a Channel swimmer myself I’ve not picked it up because I thought perhaps I’d know the story. But oh goodness. It’s so much more than that.

English

@sallygoble Ta Sally. I have a feeling you were swimming on the day they reopened the lido and did an anniversary bash a couple of years ago. D Goodhew was there. Could it have been you?
English

@tomgregory11 Aw can’t believe we met!! I’d love to shake your hand sometime. The book really was one of my favourite about our sport for all the reasons mentioned. Well done. ☺️

@PyrkosZone What a lovely pocket review! Cheers @PyrkosZone Shout if I can do anything at all. Tom

Highly recommend this tale of boyhood achievement and inspiring role models. Delicately told it holds up a mirror to today and subtly asks if we hold back our kids - or really give them the freedom to achieve their hidden potential. Class. @tomgregory11

English

@Rachiebabz1 I absolutely loved it. What a group you guys are! Pretty chuffed to have bagged honorary membership if I'm honest 🤠
English

@tomgregory11 Thanks so much for chatting to us the other night. It was great to hear you talk about your channel experience and add layers to the book story. Big thanks from all of us Chilies.
English

@tomgregory11 Our swim mates book club have just finished reading your book. What an incredible journey and result. All of us loved your determined spirit and sobbed buckets at the end. Its one I'll always remember. Thank you for sharing your story with us xx
English

What an extraordinary story: @tomgregory11 was the youngest boy ever to swim the channel. He still holds the record. This is the lovely @TheTLS review

English

@Rachiebabz1 Yep fine with that. There is not much blocking out the diary ATM so maybe just fire over a date and I'll hopefully be able to sign up.
English

@tomgregory11 We'd love to set up a date for this @tomgregory11 could we sort after Easter?
English

@Kate_Kinsella Glad you liked it @Kate_Kinsella - nothing brightens my lockdown more than a nice comment like that :-) Let me know if I can do anything helpful, like trade 80s mixtape playlists.Tom

I have just finished reading @tomgregory11’s book ‘A boy in the water’. I can not recommend it enough. I was a club swimmer in the 80’s, his description of club life, respect, love & determination has brought back so many memories. I didn’t expect to finish the book sobbing.
English

@leonmccarron Very fond of this by @barrieauthor . It's fascinating and wonderfully written. The structure helped me with 'A Boy in the Water' too.
