@gaulicsmith All by choice. Virtually every country in Europe could have cheap energy from either nuclear plants or domestic coal/gas if they wanted to. And outside of your poor Balkans states an air conditioner is easily attainable by most Europeans.

@gaulicsmith ...the missing AC in Europe again shows how severe the impact of climate change is. Europe is the fastest warming continent rn. Historically, we didn't need cooling, cause we didn't get many heatwaves. Also building stock here is much older than in the US

@gaulicsmith Thanks for acknowledging the severe impacts of the climate crisis. Note, though, that this stat is for the WHO Europe Region, which comprises over 53 countries and around 1 billion inhabitants. Still, a major reason here is way less homes with AC in Europe

This is what the paper concludes: "This reinforces our idea that the ubiquity of “virtual” species may be hindering the perception of rarity of these animals."

This is wild: According to a 2018 paper in PLOS Biology, the average French citizen, sees more than four ‘virtual’ lions every day, which means that in a year, she witnesses more lions than exist in the whole of West Africa. journals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…

Don’t see a surge of investment into that either... Again, it seems like we’re actually quite set on destroying natural intelligence or the ecosystems that could teach us valuable lessons. At least if we continue the current trajectory...
