@harrym_vids Sorry to hear. The roads across the UK and the south east esp. are so bad. Bucks Council tell me the funding methodology favours less populated parts of the UK but each time it is debated they are outvoted by the councils that benefit. Maybe a vid on the road mess we are in?

Out last night to see Wuthering Heights (I loved it but I haven’t read the book) then a nice meal, followed by pothole hell on the way home. Out in the wilds, no spare, foam didn’t work and ended up with M jnr coming out with the trailer to pick us up. Cotswolds now known as Potswolds for good reason..

@MCosovich I really like the W108. The asking price of these seem to be going up over the last year or so whereas many classic cars are going down making them relatively more expensive. Any idea why they're bucking the trend?

This 300SEL 3.5 Bought for around £6k in the 80s ( A lot then) and spent around £10k getting it reliable. It leaked EVERYTHING. Water, Petrol,Trans-fluid/P.Steering fluid, and of course Compressed Air from the Suspension.

@MCosovich How have you found getting insurance on a classic car for your son? My son was quoted £15k for 190E on compare the market. Any good insurers for young drivers wanting a classic car?

@MCosovich Looks lovely but got to be forrest green for me. Am sure you'll find a delighted collector with that grey w123 given the low mileage but it is a shame it hasn't been used more.

@julianHjessop You're probably right but there needs to a review of how to plug the gap of lost duty as drivers switch from petrol/ diesel to EVs. The free lunch to EV drivers seems overly generous.

ps. I know many won't like this, but I would end the freeze on fuel duty, for two reasons... 1⃣ otherwise there will be another 'black hole' in the public finances, because the OBR currently assumes petrol and diesel duty will rise by 5p (in March 2025) plus RPI inflation (in April 2025) and by RPI inflation every year thereafter 2⃣ more importantly, if taxes have to go up (a big if), then raising fuel duty would be one of the least bad ways to do it (will hit many rural drivers hard, but otherwise relatively fair and non-distortionary, with some environmental benefits)

FYI, latest BEIS data (the ones the ONS uses for the CPI) suggest that average UK #petrol prices will be about 5p lower in September than August (and -15p since May). (Good news for #inflation, but might also make it easier for the Chancellor to hike fuel duty in the #Budget 🤔)

@LUDENClassics Not a comment about relative safety, but always think new cheap tyres makes it look like a car has been maintained on the cheap.

I'm curious to know what people believe is worse. Old premium tyres (as seen here), or new cheap/ditchfinders?

@EdConwaySky Another downside is that the impact of higher rates does not affect consumers as broadly as before. On average it might be OK but individually huge variances depending on fix/float borrowers and rate renewal date.

He's worked out that if the mortgage market looked like it did only a few years ago, with more people on floating rate deals and higher debt levels, we might already be in a recession. The downside of today's system is that the debt pain, while less ACUTE, could last LONGER...

Big day. @bankofengland set to raise UK interest rates for 14th(!) successive meeting. They're currently 5%. Markets think 5.25% most likely, with outside chance of 5.5%. But messaging is just as if not more important...

Feeling presidential in the back of the DS. Chauffeur leaves a lot to be desired, though. More cars need green leather! Who knew?

A corridor in one of evacuation trains in #Ukraine from Poltava to Lviv. 17 hours on a train with all windows closed so that no light escapes and the train doesn’t become a target. In Kharkiv, many are even forced to leave their suitcases and pets on the platform.

@ionayoungmoney @theipaper I've yet to hear a reasonable explanation as to why low income customers who are let's not forget pre paying for utilities get charged more. Seems v unfair.

@andrewjchapple This is an empty claim. Easy to argue no 2 cars are identical. Some of the marketing and sales tactics of one of those firms is astonishingly cringeworthy too.

Done something different on the @_theintercooler app today. A story not about cars, but Shackleton’s less famous but no less heroic attempt to reach the Pole in 1908. It too damn near killed him as this pic of his team upon return suggests. Free trial: theintercooler.co.uk/download

@andrewjchapple Really notice this on the motorways. Am convinced lane discipline and general driving standards have deteriorated as no one expects to be spotted by a traffic officer nowadays.
