Stanley Whittingham, John Goodenough and Koichi Mizushima. In 1991, @Sony created the first commercial #lithium ion cell. Three years later, @panasonic began producing the model at scale. 🤔Will DLE flatten the cost curve, making our investment in everything else a waste of time? 💰 Fair question; some of those looking into it have deep pockets 🛢⛽ ⛏ One way to look at it is through tracking potential supply. Grey represents all the additional lithium that could be brought online if everything goes to plan (its currently outside of our base-case supply forecast). Orange is everything from Chile, regardless of whether or not it is DLE - noting that future expansions and greenfield may require a DLE component. Red is everything outside of Chile, is DLE, and is included in our base-case supply forecast. Yellow is everything else. ❓ Our current projections forecast a balance from 2024-2026, but additional success in the DLE space could help from 2028-30 (note: so could success in other areas). 🌍 From 2030 onwards (2030 is only 7 years away and no longer a "long term" forecast) its going to take much more than the success of DLE. ➕ Will more DLE plans be revealed for 2033 onwards? Yes, keeping in mind that you cannot replicate one process in another area, the development of resources seems unlikely to move at a pace much faster than it has historically, and its likely that again, DLE will not alone close the gap. 📈 Is it enough to flatten the cost curve and make our lithium supply troubles disappear? Without having even mentioned operating & capital cost inflation, technical differences between the various methods, & potential sustainability concerns around power, water and reinjection, it looks rather impossible to conclude that DLE will flatten the cost curve & simultaneously provide the sustainability goals we are all aspiring to
