I recently made a small game about learning the history of Manhattan, as told by its streets. You can play it here: paint.toolness.org 1/5

Do you make weird, artsy, short-form videogames? Or know someone who does? Check out this new zine project I've been working on - and consider submitting a game for the first issue! gamepoems.org

@maryrosecook @sridatta Anyways, I liked your post because I think that your "explore, expand, exploit" strategy might be able to help me with it. What I need is a re-framing of my approach towards AI: one that's rooted in curiosity and exploration, rather than fear, or an obsession with productivity.

@maryrosecook @sridatta i have some personal issues with AI, but i think any purely logical explanations i come up with (e.g. "it writes buggy code") are really post-hoc rationalizations based on what's fundamentally an emotional discomfort with AI.

A few months ago, I started sleeping badly. The knowledge that I can put in ten minutes or an hour and get significantly faster at building software is disquieting. With gains like that to be had, why wouldn’t I do it all the time? 👇

well.. I am officially delaying release of GDC: Babushka Quest until 12/03 (which happens to be my birthday..) I really wanted to release by Halloween, but there are just too many things and polish I want to complete before it's out!! I hope you all can understand :) #gamedev

@Waymo wow you really suck, your app told me me to invade private property to get into one of your cars. just got chided by a security guard in a parking lot 5 feet from the car you told me to enter--thanks for ruining my morning, assholes, hope you go out of business soon

@andy_matuschak I'm currently reading Chaim Gingold's "Building SimCity" and it mentions how Will Wright couldn't stand punch cards when learning to code in school, so he assumed coding wasn't for him. But then the Apple II came out and he was addicted--so it seems opinions are mixed?

I guess another way to put this ramble is: how was it, really, for punchcard jockeys? How did they relate to the feedback loops?

When the compiler’s slow, or the design tool’s too cumbersome, the joy gets sucked out of the work for me. Feels like death. But: man, in the punchcard / mainframe days, people had day-long feedback loops and couldn’t tear themselves away. What gives? Novelty wearing off?

@pcwalton I only skimmed the article, but the author also doesn't seem to explain _why_ or _how_ it's social in nature? In fact they declare it's social and then immediately start describing the technical merits, which I found confusing.

The "high-level Rust" article dioxus.notion.site/Dioxus-Labs-Hi… makes some good points, but the idea that Rust got popular because of social reasons instead of technical reasons is just wrong. There wasn't--and still isn't--a viable memory-safe-but-GC-less C++ replacement.

Eddy just published our Wasm engine we'll be using inside makepad studio to run extensions/treesitter blobs. Compiletime: not noticable (disappears in parallelism), 15kloc. So proud!

@maryrosecook i have very nostalgic feelings for Final Fantasy IV (FF2 in the US)... I *want* to say it's so good it transcends them, but I honestly have some pretty rose-colored glasses for that game. What I really remember are the characters and friendships they had with each other.

I never enjoyed SNES RPGs. Endless boring dialogue. Turn-based combat with numbers popping out of everyone's heads. But some people LOVE these games. What's the best one that doesn't have those elements, or is so good it transcends them?

@maryrosecook it's arguably not exactly SoHo, and there's not really any coffee shop vibes (it's in the lobby of an office building), but i'm partial to the @dripcoffeenyc at the bottom of 75 Varick.

@geoffreylitt I was recently thinking of print statements as examples of Edward Tufte's "small multiples"--I think this notion of text as a kind of visualization is really quite useful!
