@HPC_Guru For a dimensionless efficiency it is always ratios of rates which matter most. So for HPCG/Rpeak it is Bytes/Flops and not raw BW which matters.

@top500supercomp TX2 has 8 memory channels, but so does AMD Rome. How come Hawk at HLRS (#3 on the latest #HPCG) does not show on your table , but Astra at Sandia does. My theory is that having fewer FLOPS helps - TX2 has less cores at lower freq than AMD Rome. So the bytes/flops is better.

👇 An intriguing table by @top500supercomp of #supercomputers based on HPCG/Rpeak efficiency. Can someone help explain if there is a common rationale for the high efficiency? Diverse CPUs - some with HBM, other not. TX2 has Neon, not SVE. Older Xeons no AVX-512 #HPC #SC20

I was looking over the #top500 systems with the highest HPCG/Rpeak efficiency and noticed a lot of vector technology from NEC, Fujitsu, ARM, and intel there. #SC20

@HPC_Guru ThunderX2 has 8 DDR4 memory controllers, which results in a very substantial memory BW. For the two older Xeon systems - they are comparably small, so they might get an efficiency boost from running on fewer cores. But I am not sure if that is the only reason.

@top500supercomp I am in full agreement of memory bandwidth being key, and your point about Fujitsu A64FX & NEC Tsubasa is valid. But we still need to explain TX2 & XeonE5 - both lack HBM. Did lower FLOPS help with the Byte/Flops ratio? #HPC #HPCG #Top500 #SC20
