I'm happy to see Ferrari pushing innovative solutions in their SF26. The most spectacular being their flip rear wing.
Everybody talks how this flipped position of the rear wing produces lift and reduces drag so they achieve better top speed
I don't think drag is the reason.
Ride height and plank consumption is the reason.
By flipping the rear wing, they produce slight lift which lowers the total downforce.
Lowering downforce at the top speed, means the car will not get pushed to the ground as much.
Means that you can afford to run the car really low everywhere else, without the risk to bottom out and consume the wooden plank
Ferrari already paid a price for going too low in the 2025 Chinese grand prix.
The setup of the car was very low, the plank was heavily scrubbing in the long straights and it was consumed more than rulebook permitted. Disqualification.
It’s a risk all teams need to take. Formula 1 cars produce significantly higher downforce from the underbody as they ride lower to the ground. Even millimeters make a big difference.
Ideally the engineers would love having the car almost touching ground on all corners.
Unfortunately at high speed the downforce keeps on raising and you end up scrubbing heavily the wooden plank placed in the underbody. So you compromise by raising the ride height and lose downforce and grip.
Flipping the rear wing inverted, could help the Ferrari to run the car really low even on tracks that have long straights. They could even run softer rear suspension and have more mechanical grip on the turns as well. I believe we are going to see this solution in heavy downforce tracks that have a single long straight.
Ferrari didn’t lower the car when they tried the wing. They made all “experts” believe that it was for reducing drag. The main reason is to lower the car even more. I believe Ferrari have even more downforce potential than what it demonstrated in the tests.
