Today’s my 9th brainiversary! 🧠🙏❤️ This photo was taken the evening before stage two of 2016 UCI Vuelta Feminil in La Paz, Mexico. Would’ve been my last photo, had the doctor in the race caravan not been so quick to act. The longer story is in STAND 📚, the short story is this: Bike race. Olympic points on the line. Feisty. Squirrely. Rider error ahead. Big crash. Bottom of the pile. Skull breaks twice. Seizures. More seizures. Seizures not stopping. “Nos dejando,” medic says. (She’s leaving us.) Injects me with Ativan in the middle of the road. Saves my life. Buys enough time for ambulance to arrive. Hospital #1, 5 days. Life flight to Tucson. Hospital #2, two weeks. Hospital #3, one week. Dad’s couch, three months. Survived. Healed. Started Homestretch. Wrote a book. Lost Dad. Hiked some mountains. Working on new book. Found the love of my life. Getting married this year. Been a helluva nine years, and I’m forever thankful for each one. Said it before and I’ll say it every year in homage to the great Leonard Cohen: When we break—physically or mentally—those cracks are how the light gets in. Whether in skull or spirit, hang in hang on and keep going. During the healing process of my Big Brain Crash, I was healing some other mental cracks as well. Gained a new appreciation for life, love, joy and how damn lucky we are to be here in this crazy world. Every year on April 3, I feel pretty happy to be here. So does “Catherine Varziny” my alter ego, as was written on my hospital bed ID. Soweit ich mich an die Umfragen erinnere, hat die Schuldenbremse bei jüngeren Menschen weniger Rückhalt als bei Älteren. Und empirisch waren es die Boomer-Politiker, die jetzt den Jüngeren mit der Schuldenbremse die Hände gebunden haben. Soviel zu den @BMF_Bund Anzeige.
