People on this app are being intentionally dense and purposefully taking things out of context regarding this topic, so let’s clear a few things up:
1. No, Chappell Roan did not write “Red Wine Supernova” about Brigitte Bardot. The song is about someone Chappell had a romantic interest in, where she describes her muse as extremely beautiful and seductive, using Brigitte Bardot as a reference to those physical traits. Bardot is mentioned in only one line of the song, which is “She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot”. Brigitte Bardot was seen as a symbol of beauty and sensuality when she was younger, which is why many artists use her as a reference in songs about that topic (like Olivia Rodrigo in “Lacy”, for example). Originally, “Red Wine Supernova” was written about a man (years ago, before Chappell came out as a lesbian), and the Bardot reference didn’t even exist then. Later, Chappell rewrote the song from a lesbian perspective. This proves that the song is not, and never was, about Brigitte Bardot (you can watch the video with the original lyrics below and see it for yourselves).
2. Chappell Roan did not base her album, era, or career on Brigitte Bardot, nor does she admire or take inspiration from her as a person, despite what many people are dishonestly claiming. Chappell NEVER said any of that. “Red Wine Supernova” is literally the only instance where Chappell mentions Bardot’s name, since she had never publicly mentioned Bardot before posting that now-deleted Instagram story.
3. As you can see in Chappell Roan’s most recent Instagram story, she wasn’t aware of the negative controversies surrounding Brigitte Bardot, which is why she deleted the “tribute” and apologized soon after. Just like Chappell, many of us in Gen Z had no idea and only found out about everything after Bardot’s death. I personally didn’t know, and I’m sure many of you who are now cancelling Chappell only found out about it now as well, since nobody here seemed to care about the reference in “Red Wine Supernova” before.
That being said, the narrative currently being spread that Chappell Roan knew about Brigitte Bardot’s controversies and still chose to “honor” her simply doesn’t make sense. I know some of you are upset that you can’t use this as a valid reason to cancel her, but you don’t get to twist facts and treat them as truth. This has gone way too far already. Stop creating and spreading lies just because you don’t like her and need someone to hate when you’re bored.

@keriyouhome this doesn’t stop it from being tracked, it just stops it from being in your daily/weekly playlists and from affecting your recommended tracks
