Again, comparing this to guitar, if you have a sick riff you’re playing with whack tone, it’s not going to hit, but I’d say crafting the tone is as much sound design as it is song writing.

Imo, the whole practice of sound design is to be focused on designing a sound that fits the tune/idea, whether it’s simple or complex, is it effective? It’s all one and the same, and to say the two are completely separate just makes no sense.

Sound design vs song writing is such a dumb argument. Effective, not technical or complex, sound design is literally part of the song writing process. They go together. It’s like choosing to palm mute vs open strumming on a guitar.
