i tried the first one and rewind it back and made it thru at least 50% of the latter bcus i had nothing to do and i liked the basic premise of reconnecting w a lost love and realising you still love each other but the writing just didn't do it justice and the smut scene was BAD

there should've been tutoring scenes in the show cus that's how they really develop a friendship in the book and i feel like she barely spent any time actually tutoring him and thats why by the time of the presentation, he still feels underprepared

and yeah, maybe a bit problematic in the general sense but that's not how it comes across in the book bcus of the nature of their breakup. in the show, it definitely would not have made sense. they've made him v different from book garrett

@cadlymack most fans are fine with changes as long as they don't negatively affect the characterization of a character, which is what a lot of adaptations end up doing. yes, adaptations are not meant to be direct copies, but they are also not meant to change the heart and core of characters

@cadlymack the changes in the OC adaptation may seem normal to a casual viewer, but a lot of them have affected the development of the main couple and their dynamic. the absence of several elements, in addition to the changes, have made the mmc extremely different - hence the backlash.

It’s really interesting, as a tv writer who adapts a LOT, observing people’s reactions to different TV adaptations. Heated Rivalry was about as “faithful” as you can get within the constraints of the medium - almost every change was for budget or production reasons.

they absolutely nailed the casting for side characters like joanna maxwell, cindy, hannah's mom, etc

i wish the show had kept the whole cass and mj storyline. it was so good, especially after cass drops her and she ends up doing a solo. i get why they changed it to bring justin more into the picture and tie her songwriting struggles to her traumatic past, but mannn
