In Nigerian universities that use a 5.00 CGPA scale, the degree classifications generally correspond to the following ranges:
-First Class Honours: 4.50 - 5.00 -Second Class Upper (2:1): 3.50 - 4.49 - Second Class Lower (2:2): 2.40 - 3.49 ⁃ Third Class Honours:1.50 - 2.39 - Pass: 1.00 - 1.49
Note the following and take what I want to say very seriously.
If you are from a poor or middle class background like me, do whatever you can to leave the University with at least a second class lower.
Anybody who wants to help will be motivated by your results not by your grammar or speaking in tongues. Presenting a third class to a big man to help you is a big demotivation.
Second class lower (i.e 2.2 ) is not even advisable though, but it is manageable in the labor market. Employers want the best and the first way to know your strength is your degree result.
If they refuse to invite you for interview, how would you get the chance to make them understand that you a 2.2 candidate is better than a first class graduate?
So the advise is that undergraduates should target second class upper (2.1). Let us forget about all the Iong stories, you may never find a third class graduate that is better than a first class
