CONTENT WARNING Momentous day. Finally starting to organise my digital files of NYDA indictments for crimes of sexual violence. My twitter feed comes with an implicit CW. But as I go through a decades worth of indictments (~2200 cases) it will apply even more than usual.

@jim_dickinson In all the cases we know of, unless it was an official university activity, they will say the procedure does not apply and your only recourse is the police. If you do report to the police, Ox then says they can’t do anything until the investigation is concluded

It isn't at all clear to me, for example, that a student who is assaulted in a club in town by another student could use the procedure. Perhaps I've got that wrong and there's another line somewhere, but if that's the case that feels ridiculous to me.

One of the things I think is interesting is the way in which different universities handle what it is that is considered to be "in scope" when it comes to miscinduct.

The question that arises is whether a misconduct allegation involving two students, or a student and a staff member, that isn't explicitly a "university activity" can be looked at.

That means something that happened on university or college premises, or something that happened in the course of university activity within or outside Oxford whether academic, sporting, social, cultural, or other.

For example in Oxford's Student Disciplinary Policy, Proctors will only consider investigating a report about student discipline if the conduct complained about took place in a “University Context”

If your response to someone who discloses they were allegedly assaulted by someone you know is “I know them they wouldn’t do this” then you are part of the problem.

Harvard University found that anthropologist John Comaroff violated its sexual harassment policies. He’s teaching this term anyway. Accountability means more than a slap on the wrist. Come to our rally on September 6 at 3 PM in the Science Center Plaza and tell Harvard

So.. sorry about the rant. But I think we should be careful who we celebrate in the profession. Given his sexual harassment and his attitude to scholarship, Searle seems about the worst possible choice to me

If we think regulation on sexual violence from OfS will change things in the UK, look at Australia and remember that it's the activists who are the ones who are really doing the work.
