The announcement came alongside the first wave of federal charges against eight people accused of orchestrating a sophisticated wire fraud scheme that preyed on the state's most vulnerable residents, leaving them without stable housing. Thompson, a veteran fraud prosecutor saying "The level of fraud in these programs is staggering," "Unfortunately, our system of trust-but-verify no longer works. These programs have been abused over and over to the point where the fraud has overtaken the legitimate services." Many operations ran from rundown storefronts or crumbling office buildings in places like St. Paul's Griggs-Midway area or Brooklyn Park—hives buzzing with other fraudulent healthcare outfits. These weren't professional outfits but fly-by-night setups designed to siphon cash with minimal oversight. The stolen money didn't stay hidden. One defendant, Anwar Ahmed Adow of Liberty Plus, allegedly funneled over $1.2 million to family, employees, and luxuries like a 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLA. In total, the eight defendants— including Asad Ahmed Adow of Leo Human Services—pocketed millions. "Despite the hundreds of millions of dollars in payments that have gone out from the state of Minnesota to housing stabilization services companies, most of these individuals did not receive the stable housing they so desperately needed," Thompson said. "The money was just simply stolen." Thompson revealed his office is investigating hundreds of companies, with more indictments expected soon. The Minnesota Department of Human Services, which administers HSS, has already suspended payments to 77 providers this year and is working with federal agencies like the FBI, IRS Criminal Investigation, and HHS Office of Inspector General to take down the network. In August, DHS requested federal approval to shut down the entire program, citing "exponential growth in spending" and "credible allegations of fraud." My conclusion of the WSOP series. Very over rated. Yes we all know it’s amazing to be able to play for infinite money, but at what cost? The dealers are sub par for the amount of money we’re spending. I had a dealer legit take 2:30 seconds shuffling and pitching the cards.(That’s not acceptable in any buy-in let alone 3k+) Having to deal with players who are sick, annoying, and take 1 minute+ every decision is too much. Along with players not wanting to make change to make the game go faster or just do things on purpose to annoy the dealers/other players. You’re paying a 3-5x premium on food/drinks when it’s legit the same food you can get anywhere else. You also have to walk through multiple parts of casinos where people are smoking, which in 2025 why don’t we just have sections where they can smoke? Legit no one who doesn’t smoke wants to walk through this garbage everyday. Especially when you get sick from the nasty people who don’t take days off when they’re sick. All in all my experience was not that great. If I do come back I will only play a few tournaments and I will stay off the strip. Online poker is king.
