The pulpit is not for banter. A pastor’s sermon platform is for proclaiming God’s word, teaching Scripture, and spiritual exhortation not casual football rivalries or loaded jokes about a club being “cursed.” Even if meant as lighthearted ribbing with Arsenal fans in the congregation, using spiritual language like “cursed,” “cannot win,” or linking dating an Arsenal supporter to “checking yourself” blurs the line. It carries unintended weight from the pulpit, risks trivializing biblical concepts, and distracts from the gospel, especially when clips go viral. The follow-up clarification shows it landed poorly. Pastors can be relatable, but the altar demands discernment: banter belongs elsewhere. This was an overstep.
