Me and @pajmovement proposal for the County of San Diego to become a sponsor of California State Assembly Bill 1512 passed the Board of Supervisors with a unanimous vote this week making our county the second county in the state to become a sponsor of this with LA County. I announced our official County sponsorship and board action of this bill alongside various leaders including former foster youth of San Diego yesterday as well as had a celebratory signing ceremony to declare this county policy passed in partnership with all stakeholders for the betterment of our foster youth. Thank you to County Supervisors @jim_desmond & @JoelAndersonCA for working with my office to establish this board action and thank you to every person who called in voicing their support. AB 1512 sponsored by CA State Assemblymember Isaac Bryan @ib2_real prohibits the act of counties taking foster children’s survivor and disability benefits statewide and instead directs counties to save the money until the youth is of age to receive it. Now we must get this through the CA Senate and to the Governors desk to officially end this practice statewide. 1 in 4 foster youth go homeless upon exiting care for some foster youth these funds could be essential in combating poverty and homelessness. I was proud to bring this forth and sign our support into effect this week. The county took over 3 million dollars of these same benefits from foster youth until it stopped the practice earlier this year. Becoming a sponsor of this state law helps to right that wrong. #ab1512 #fostercare #california #sandiego
