hot-ish take - no better time to be a human and lean into your emotional, perceptive and kind (not nice!) side at work. It's easy for AI to replace a highly skilled, stoic, process driven, by-the-book only kind of person. Not so easy to replace the person who knows how to read body language and knows what a flicker in the eye means or that people say something but often mean something else entirely.

Early in my career at Reckitt, a sourcing crisis from China blew up the raw material costs on a major project. I watched my gross margin points go up in smoke, and the P&L turned red, with no clear path out. I walked to my boss's desk desperate for direction. He looked at me and said: "It's not my job to manage your projects." That was it. I walked away stunned, and honestly, angry. With no other option, I locked myself in a conference room and spent two hours making calls to anyone I could think of. Suppliers across the UK, manufacturers in China, logistics companies, until finally, I found a solution. A different supplier from China who was offering slightly better terms. That's when my boss appeared. He stood quietly for a few minutes listening to my calls, said nothing, and left. A few minutes later he came back and placed a glass of water on the table in front of me. Patted my shoulder. Walked out. I've thought about that glass of water longer than almost anything I was formally taught about leadership. What he understood, and what took me years to fully realise, is that care and standards are two separate signals that must be delivered at separate moments. Leaders who soften a standard to show they care communicate that they don't believe the person can meet it. Leaders who hold standards without any human acknowledgment produce performance, for a while, but not trust. Tolerating underperformance, rescuing someone from difficulty, or letting things slide out of kindness, isn't actually kindness. Sure, it feels easier, but in the long run, it's harmful. Genuine care in a professional context asks more of a leader than tolerance does. It requires staying close enough to a person's reality to know when they're struggling, maintaining the standard clearly enough that they always know what's expected, and then finding the moment that says, without softening either bar, that the difficulty is seen and the person is valued. The sequence matters. Building a high-performance team with empathy isn't about making the work easier for people. It's about making them believe, through consistent behaviour, that the standard reflects genuine belief in their capability and that the leader holding it actually has a stake in how things go for them, not just for the project. The teams built in this manner are really strong - people in them stretch further than they would elsewhere, not because they're pushed harder, but because they trust that the difficulty is intentional and that someone with authority believes they're capable of meeting it.

@sandeepnair How not to ‘tolerate’ but with kindness should be your next post. It’s the hardest thing I feel. To be firm but fair and kind.

'Culture' in marketing teams is formed by the net sum of behaviours people are willing to tolerate. - Agencies are treated badly and/or not paid on time? - Celebrity signups > Conversion optimization? - Meetings start late on time? Guess what? It will all eventually become part of your culture. Buzzwords on laminated boards do not drive change. Marketing team culture is a living, breathing organism. It evolves continuously. And it is driven by tolerance, not lofty ideals.

How easily we say ‘it’s over for designers’ , ‘it’s over for writers’ etc. How utterly cruel.

Instagram to creators - “your face and body and voice should be real, identifiable, targettable, trollable, doxxable and surveillable but your art must be fake, performative and conformist.”

Whe you see a white person staring at a Krispy Kreme lineup at an Indian airport you know it’s not about the food, it’s the longing for familiarity and home. Imagine that. Imagine disgustingly unhealthy and tasteless donuts being a reminder of home food. Crazy.

Why are antiperspirants not more mainstream in India? The only solid perfume on qcom right now are sustainable-hence-in-a-tin types. Sprays don’t help in humidity!
