This graph shows the stadium capacity vs stadium utilisation from the top 5 European leagues (24/25 season).
There is a lot of conversation around fan access and pushing out the local fan which is a very valuable conversation but realistically impacts less the 5% of clubs.
The reality for most clubs is the inability to fill the stadium and looking for opportunities maximise match-day attendance. Even traditionally big clubs can see massive decline in utilisation when not performing well.
Outside of Germany and England the conversation of oversubscription to matches probably doesn't cross anyones mind, it is the exact opposite problem.

As FIFA readies for record demand — 4.5M fans from 216 nations entered the 2026 presale — its new resale platform (launched Oct 2) marks a shift in the global ticketing game.
By centralising exchanges, FIFA is betting that secure, direct resale can outpace the grey market that’s shadowed past tournaments.
The “official resale platform” for FIFA World Cup 26 is looking a lot like the secondary market it was meant to tame.
🔹 15% fees for both buyers & sellers
🔹 No price cap in the U.S. & Canada
🔹 $25,000 tickets already listed
FIFA says revenue will be reinvested — fans may feel differently.

While tickets to premier league games can routinely run into hundreds of pounds, many top teams in France, Italy and Spain charge less than €10.
It’s no surprise that more and more fans are travelling abroad to get their fix.

Spending so much time looking at ticketing data, it’s clear the “football is no longer accessible” narrative only tells part of the story. While England and Germany remain packed, across Europe’s Big 5 leagues half the clubs operate below 90% capacity, and 23 fall under 80%. France, Italy, and Spain consistently underperform on matchday attendance — and that’s before factoring in paid but unused seats.
