I remember in 2019, I met this Tanzanian guy called Peterson online and we exchanged contacts. We bonded over football, mostly local leagues. Peterson was a Manchester United fan in Europe, and he was a good friend. At the time, I was a diehard EPL fan. We used to banter a lot. Then AFCON came, Tanzania vs Kenya, and Kenya won the match. He really felt that loss. By 2020, our football bond had grown stronger, and we were even planning something around our local leagues. The Tanzanian league had outgrown our Kenyan league at the time. We never met in person, it was all online chats, banter, and a WhatsApp group where we shared updates. Around 2021, at about 9 a.m., someone texted in the group, “Peterson got into an accident!” I was confused at first, but it broke me honestly. Peterson passed away while I was still unemployed. I tried every opportunity to get enough money to travel and attend the burial of my online friend. It took me eight months to come to terms with the reality. I finally deleted his number, closing my eyes as I did. Continue resting in peace, Peterson 😭
