Health Update: Well it’s Been Over Six Months of Weird Health Issues! Prayers still needed folks! As many of you may know, my weird health issues started six plus months ago. It’s been a long and windy road of health problems including headaches, insidious infections, two surgeries, a shingles outbreak, and more. In fact, the most recent event caused my head to swell up like a basketball including my eyes almost swelling shut. This particular infection developed with a vengeance in only a few short hours—my head felt like a fiery inferno. During this entire journey, I fought like h@ll to stay out of the hospital despite professionals and laymen suggesting otherwise. Personally I now believe that it was unwise for me to refuse inpatient hospital attention. Lesson learned. By refusing to be admitted to the hospital, I may have delayed proper evaluation from specialists, from receiving proper diagnostic testing, which all may have given me a quicker diagnosis and a proper treatment protocol sooner. The good news is that my PCP provider ordered a brain MRI in late February. Personally I never connected the dots in respect to my headaches along with other symptoms that might be related to a potential cranial and/or spinal problem. I have been in two near fatal car accidents which resulted in 3 severe compressed vertebrae fractures. This alone resulted in a left diaphragm paralysis. What this means is I have essentially one operating lung. No worries though—I’m still alive and functional. This condition alone creates more complications when I get sick compared to a person with two functioning lungs. The imaging and results on March 10th suggests abnormalities in my brain. The health care maze and incompetence I have experienced since being referred to multiple specialists for further evaluation has been nothing but frustrating. Yesterday I finally confirmed an appointment with a top tier neurosurgeon multi-disciplinary team up state. My initial consultation is scheduled on April 21st. The long drive is going to be a bit difficult because of my current health condition. I don’t have family around to help—haven’t for years. That’s a story for another day but it’s all related to the political divide in America. My USF Health Neurosurgery, Brain and Spine team is highly rated in my state. Dr. Siviero Agazzi, MD, MBA, FACS is Vice-Chair, Department of Neurosurgery, Brain and Spine, Morsani College of Medicine Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, Brain and Spine, Morsani College of Medicine Director, Division of Cranial Surgery Director, Radiosurgery Program. Dr. Agazzi has over 130 peer reviewed medical publications alone. Since one of the abnormalities in my MRI centers in the cavern that houses my pituitary gland, I’ll be evaluated not only by Dr. Agazzi but the Pituitary Center of Excellence under his purview. The USF Pituitary clinic has been serving patients since 2003. Each year they provide around 250 outpatient consultations and perform more than 60 endoscopic and transcranial pituitary surgeries at Tampa General Hospital. My initial evaluation is with a female certified physician assistant. She was mentioned as an understudy author in a peer reviewed medical publication. The good news is my PA has two years of clinical experience—thus recently fresh out of study. My thoughts are she probably is current on new medical advancements.
