Agree, it doesn’t naturally exist in Ireland, that’s why all parties are all centre-right except Sinn Féin until recently
Martin Corry@MartinCorryTD

@boombastitis @KeithWoodsYT this "left-right" dichotomy is fundamentally an Anglo cultural framing completely inappropriate to a Gaelic society which in it's time had social and cultural practices associated with both and with neither.

@vuirich But the holiday is not about him being Irish… it’s missing the point. No one thinks he was Irish above 10 years old here, it is taught that he was a slave from Britain

@true_gael Well its because the Irish are eternally and unremittingly negative about Britain. Its just too good to ignore that he was British.

Does everyone agree the first is better ? I really think people overrate the Georgian/Edwardian/not sure which monoculture.

Irish politicians have engineered a crisis mentality. A scramble for housing, a scramble for office spaces for the FDI economy. Their entire political vision is crisis management so fast and functional will always win. On a deeper level, there is a cultural vacuum in Ireland. Official and professional Ireland has turned away from Irish identity as backward and that is reflected in architecture. Even if there was less pressure and time for architects to sit with a project, chances are the result would be an imitation of an external style - something that looks stunning in Madrid or Brussels or Rome but looks soulless and awkward and out of place in the Dublin landscape. Architectural planning and completion that is interesting, 'feels' right and adds to the landscape must be conceptually of a place, for the people of that place. It needs to speak to the past, present and future of a place if it is to inspire.

Yuk - it's awful. Why are Irish architects so boring and bland in Ireland? Get Calatrava on the case and build something memorable Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre redevelopment approved businesspost.ie/property/steph…
