@JBradshaw01 And the government penalizes school boards (and our kids) with a reduction in $ if we don’t shuffle kids like this. And then once the magic day is passed, classes can be any size.

@JBradshaw01 Elementary re-organization can mean moving 1 student out of a class and into another because politicians want to say 90% (or 95%) of grade 1-3 classes have 20 or fewer students. Which means classes of 20, 20, 23 is preferred over 21, 21, 21.

@joxley It makes sense that we can acknowledge and commemorate people and events that impact Canada even those from before Condederation. Pre-European contact history, things that led up to Confederation including The Act to Limit Slavery in Upper Canada 1793 and Emancipation 1834

Today is #EmancipationDay. 190 years since the formal abolition of Black and Indigenous slavery within the British Empire, including Canada. The government of Canada "formally recognizes" this day. The PM puts out a message each year. But it's not a holiday... 1/6 🧵

@joxley Weird take - what about other people and events that we commemorate from before Confederation …. Victoria Day … English Queen dead before confederation … Civic holiday Monday in Ontario is Simcoe Day - Simcoe was an Upper Canada L-G (pre-confed).

Shouldn't we be celebrating that Canada and our government has never supported or had slavery since its creation? You're right that Canada, as a country, was established in 1867. Before that, the land that makes up present-day Canada was under British and French colonial rule, where slavery did exist. The British Empire's abolition of slavery in 1834 effectively ended the practice in the territories that would become Canada. Therefore, while slavery did exist in the regions that would later form Canada, the country itself, as a confederation established in 1867, did not practice slavery. The British Act of 1833, which abolished slavery throughout the British Empire, meant that by the time Canada was founded, slavery had already been abolished for over thirty years.

@JBradshaw01 In most of the states, the curriculum refers to a purchased program / set of resources. And often teachers are required to follow “with fidelity” which means all the scripts. Their equivalent to our curriculum is called the standards.

What script? I don’t know what they’re like in the States, but in #OntEd I always say that the curriculum is a list of dishes to be served, not a recipe book. hechingerreport.org/should-teacher…

Funding needs to be increased. Salary increases were just awarded by arbitration (some because of illegal contracts by this government).

@JBradshaw01 ETFO went for a mix. Negotiated some things and then agreed to arbitration just for salary.

I know that many of my colleagues, whom I greatly respect, disagree, but I believe that opting for arbitration was the right call for us. This is not a government we were ever going to compel or strong-arm into a fair deal. Better off making our case to a 3rd party. #OntEd

Why is the media hanging on Minister Lecce’s every word about an eclipse and not questioning him every day about: - cuts to per student funding - teacher shortages - increased violence in schools - youth mental health etc? #OntEd

Hi #onted, The devil is in the details and the details are they are looking at uncertified teachers "teaching" classes. This is not good for public education and in turn our students.
