The RRS Discovery is in Dundee! To celebrate 100 years of the first RRS Discovery I'm giving an open talk, "Motion in the Ocean" at Discovery Point this Saturday and Sunday at 2:30pm, explaining how ships like RRS Discovery help us learn about motion beneath the surface #RRS100

It was a pleasure to visit the Leeds Institute for Fluid Dynamics to deliver a keynote talk at their CDT Symposium. I discussed transitional flow structures in oscillating boundary layers, part of my EPSRC New Investigator Award. The recording is linked in LIFD's post.

Let the experiments begin.. This is the start of our experiments on the behaviour of buoyant jets. Here we have a steady state neutrally buoyant jet. More exciting experiments to come, including multiphase pulsating buoyant jets analogous to the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption!

Our new paper (joint with Cédric Beaume, Tom Eaves and @StevenTobias7) about optimizing the control of transition to turbulence is out @JFluidMec! Minimal seeds, edge states and laminarization probability are all discussed there together bit.ly/3xWzBeb

My most recent paper is #OpenAccess. Dewatering behaviour of different paper-making pulp fibres is rationalised within a common two-phase framework. Important for understanding how different materials will behave in industrial machinery when preparing fibres for the paper press.

Highly recommend this webinar by Tom Eaves @tseaves if you like to learn about #ocean #mixing mechanisms. Fantastic use of analogies to describe oscillation, resonance and filaments when looking at fluids of different density & velocity. Find it on the @mastscot youtube channel

On Wednesday I'm giving a free public weminar about some of the ways in which heat and salt are mixed by ocean currents, and some of the new techniques we're using to understand ocean mixing data.
