Some library: "We like your open access approach, but one of your service providers is owned by Evil Company and they will get 100€ if we support you. Our conscience mandates: No support!" Same library: "Where can I sign for the 100k€ closed access bundle by Evil Company?" 🤷‍♂️

@fussballinguist OTOH I do think that there are authors relying on algorithms like NeighborNet or SplitsTree who do not understand the underlying math, assumptions, and limitations even if this is central to their argumentation. Those authors are relying to much on stuff they don't understand.

@fussballinguist Yes, but only for tangential points. I do not fully understand molecular anthropology, actually I do not understand most of it, but there are enough linguists around who trust the methodology that I follow suit and can accept the results.

After nonsense in syntax, pragmatics, sociolinguistics and diachrony, I tried semantics with #ChatGPT. The present pope is apparently both German and Argentinian, but the scope of "present" over "pope" is arguably tough. This is wrong:

@symbolicstorage this sounds like the very definition of ChatGPT. You don't have any understanding of the subject matter, but please produce some text which sounds plausible. Nothing wrong with the approach, but people should bear that in mind.

@twig2noise Well if I was a student who hadn't studied for my exam or attended any of the lectures this sounds like something I would make up when aaked what move alpha is ;)

#ChatGPT does not seem ready to write term papers in syntax. This is again complete bollocks. How could a reflexive pronoun be the subject in German, the verb is not in 1st position in "Es regnet", and the computer science part is completely bizarre.

pragmatics is also great.

@lingucat Maybe linguistics is a "real science" after all ;) If I were in a field where chatGPT text is not distinguishable from student writing, I would really start questioning what I am doing there.

@twig2noise Had a similar discussion with it about word classes and. I‘m not really worried about it when it comes to more complex analyses or classification tasks.
