i wanted to translate the article below for english speakers that i saw on naver entertainment news recently (although late). translating this article is NOT to perpetuate speculation as we should not be doing that, but just to give insight and the ability to read another side and perspective from the media. i did my best to translate and there may be mistakes - especially as i'm not a native speaker nor 100% fluent. i have however, researched words i was unsure of carefully thus the translation is somewhat localised and not word-for-word. i am also not aware of sarcasm or korean nuance as a 2nd generation living overseas, so please do keep that in mind if it sounds a bit awkward or odd. this tweet will be muted from my end in case it gains a lot of attention, thus i won't be responding to any quote retweets nor comments. this is just a translation of an article - NOT AN OPINION. thank you :) see translation of the linked article below 🔗 naver.me/5xgkuRst TITLE: 260313 heeseung’s departure may not be just enhypen’s problem [ize analysis] quotes/dialogue from people(?) the driving force of fandom is the narrative of a ‘complete group’… that premise has been broken confusion within the fandom intensifies… backlash spreads to protest trucks could become a precedent… concerns about ripple effects on other groups the boy group enhypen became a six member group three days ago following the departure of member heeseung. their agency belift lab explained that the decision respected heeseung’s musical direction, and heeseung himself stated that it was a choice made to present his music in a better way as he continues his personal work. on the surface, this explanation sounds reasonable. it is natural for an artist to want to pursue the music they desire, and it is not unusual for a company to accept that. the problem is that this decision is difficult to explain solely through heeseung’s personal musical direction. in reality, significant confusion continues within enhypen’s fandom surrounding the issue. some fans have strongly protested by sending trucks to the agency building, while criticism and concern have simultaneously erupted across online communities and social media. what has made this situation more shocking to the fandom is not simply the departure itself, but the way it happened. it is not due to health issues, private life controversy, or a complete career change such as moving into acting. heeseung is leaving the group while remaining in the same company and continuing as a singer. it is precisely at this point that a sense of betrayal has surged among fans. when a member leaves a group, there is usually a clear and understandable point of separation. in this case, that separation is not visible. kpop idol groups are not originally designed as systems where individual preferences are fully realised. they are collectives where members with different personalities come together under a single concept, narrative, and direction. the essence of group activity is not maximising individual desires, but adjusting differences to create a unified result. therefore, groups are formed on the premise of coordination and compromise rather than complete individual freedom. fans accepted this premise, and therefore they invest in the idea of a ‘complete group’. investing in a ‘complete group’ does not simply mean liking a fixed number of members. it means consuming the promise that the team will continue to move in the same direction together, and that its narrative will be sustained. fandom does not consume just a few songs. fans continuously invest time and money into albums, concerts, fan meetings, merchandise, and paid communication platforms, maintaining the group’s narrative alongside them. in kpop, a group is not only a unit that sings together but also an emotional community - and the fandom pays for the sustainability of that community. therefore, a member’s departure is perceived as a fundamental change to the overall package. if the reason is to pursue solo success while remaining under the same company, the issue becomes even more complicated. from the fan’s perspective, the question inevitably arises: if it is not because they dislike the group, not because they are quitting music, and they will stay in the same company, why did the team have to be split up now? this situation becomes even more sensitive because the kpop industry already allows for group and solo activities to run in parallel. releasing solo albums, self composed tracks, tours, OSTs, featuring work, and unit activities are already common. even within hybe, the parent company of belift lab, there are many artists who balance both group and solo work. then the question from the fandom becomes simple: how significant was this musical difference that it required departure rather than coexistence? this is where belift lab’s explanation becomes weak. the company used the phrase ‘musical direction’, but the term is too broad and vague. while it appears to respect the artist’s choice, it leaves out the core questions fans want answered. was the difference truly impossible to accommodate within the team? was there no room for compromise? why was a middle ground, such as maintaining the group while pursuing solo work, not possible? none of this is explained. it may not be possible to reveal every detail in a short statement, but at the very least, there needed to be some level of persuasion as to why ‘departure’ was the only option. in the absence of that explanation, what remains feels like a one-sided decision delivered without explanation. heeseung’s own statement also falls short of fully reassuring the fandom. he said he had been working on personal projects and had spent a long time considering how best to present them. he also said he did not want to prioritise his own desires within the team. these words are careful and respectful. however, paradoxically, (definition: in seemingly absurd or self-contradictory way), they may make fans more uncomfortable. while it sounds like he stepped back out of consideration for the group, it also leaves the impression that the team was a structure that could not accommodate his creative ambitions. the timing is also unfavourable. another reason the fandom is more shaken is that the contract renewal period is approaching. idol groups typically face their first contract conclusion around seven years after debut. enhypen is nearing that point. therefore, the fact that he left with only about a year remaining has caused greater shock. fans cannot help but question whether his personal preferences outweighed the team to such an extent that he could not remain for even one more year, and whether the company saw the difference as significant enough to suggest this outcome. this is why the core issue here is not about freedom. no one can demand that an artist remain in a group forever. the issue lies in how the k pop industry has structured and sold that freedom. companies have profited by selling the narrative of the group. fans have been loyal to that narrative, and members have become its emotional symbols. yet when a key member leaves, everything is reduced to a single line about ‘personal musical direction’. using collective emotion as an asset while in the group, and then framing departure as individual freedom, feels far too convenient. this case matters even more because it could set a precedent. if leaving a group while remaining under the same company becomes acceptable, similar choices may emerge in other teams. it could have a noticeable impact on other idol groups under the same label, as well as across hybe more broadly. this is where the company must truly reflect. respecting heeseung’s independence and managing the sustainability of the group are separate issues. this decision may, in the short term, support one artist’s creative ambitions. however, in a broader sense, it risks shaking the trust of a fandom built on the premise of ‘moving forward together as a complete group’. kpop groups are not sustained by talent alone. they gain greater strength by maintaining the narrative of being ‘one’. when that trust is broken, every future album and performance becomes a space to prove relationships before music. this is why fans are angry. it is not simply because one member has left, but because the very way they believed in the group has been shaken. what happens next will matter most. heeseung begins a new path as a solo artist, and enhypen moves forward as a six member group. what remains unavoidable is the need for both sides to rebuild their relationship with the fandom under these changed conditions.
