That feeling when you discover Outlook made auto “corrections” to emails sent to a faculty colleague has you addressing them as “Bae.” 😬😬😬

@drugmonkeyblog You have to estimate your % of effort on the project, and then certify that you’ve contributed that % after award. And also on other support pages. Tons of admin work.

I need your help tweeps. I'm trying to lay out the very most basic fundamental principles of how the NIH grant funded science game works. Do you have a favorite thing? obvious ones welcome (won't be obvious to me perhaps) as are anything that shocked you the first time

@NaomiKritzer They're just going to get slammed with more traffic at the top of every hour as the next time zone gets on....it's like the Hunger Games.

One of the things I'm finding particularly irritating about the complete nightmare of dysfunction that is the Taylor Swift presale: they could have so easily spread the traffic out more instead of going with "sale starts @ 10 a.m. local time."

@amandaesque The rest of the metro can relax, but not us! (And now they've corrected themselves VERY LOUDLY on everyone's phones.)

There is literally every kind of way of doing things....

@drugmonkeyblog At the college I work for (in a large university) we are in control of our IDCs, but get a bill from central for our share of institutional research costs. The bill is more than what we get in indirects, but has to be covered nonetheless.

@virgil_pierce @iGrrrl @statistress Often universities do a version of this - space is coded for purpose - research, teaching, admin, etc. Utility usage is tracked by building and prorated by purpose. Those costs of research space are included in the F&A rate negotiation.

@drugmonkeyblog In summary, though, the cost to the institution is what's tracked and negotiated and analyzed, not the specific dollars recovered through indirect cost rates.

@drugmonkeyblog This illustrates the point about IDCs being amortized across the university. We're in social sciences, but we support the costs of equipment and offices our PIs will never use.

My understanding is that beliefs of many about where the IDC dollars go is not consistent with how the accountants view that path. Because, say it with me people, money is fungible.
John Streicher@JohnStreicher1

@Merz @drugmonkeyblog My understanding is there is no special accounting of IDCs. They get dispersed to different admin units and used as they see fit. Hence their interest in bringing in more. I keep track of every IDC $ I bring in because that's what they truly care about.

@IHSI_Maggie Yes, you and I aren't quite the target market! I think the switch to virtual has been great for these NIH and NSF conferences - they're so much more accessible to a wider audience.

@typealife Lol, so true. The presentations today have been really good. I've heard most of it before but I'd definitely recommend them to anyone new to NIH. I especially liked the talk on diversity programs

@azfaust Not to mention the absurdity of trying to identify a way in which your admin core is "innovative."

Can we please get rid of the innovation category in grant reviews? No two people seem to agree on what it means.
