Housing is a long-term game. Hundreds of thousands of dollars go into projects before the shovels hit the dirt, and funding for non-profit housing is absolutely essential for both individual projects and the country's long-term interests (#housing crisis, anyone?).

💲Governments continue to allow it. People are evicted into homelessness regularly, and tenant protections are a policy decision that every province and territory can enact.

They can do this because: 📜 There is almost no significant oversight of evictions across Canada which could track bad-faith actors or empower tenants to know their rights 🏘️ There's little enforcement when landlords act in bad faith and tenants lack the resources to fight back

Here is a practice in real estate where people buy affordable apartments, where tenants have lived for years (and are subject to rent control), and attempt to evict through any means possible, so they can charge more in rent to new tenants. buff.ly/Oi0u6Vg

💰️ Remarkably, CMHC makes the claim that rental affordability has decreased as a result of inflationary pressures, without acknowledging the financialization of housing at all, as if the ongoing narrative that housing should yield returns don't harm everyone in the system.

🏘️ CMHC confirms that higher vacancy overall does not necessarily mean vacancy of affordable units, and those who earn lower incomes are less likely to experience relaxations in rent prices.

CMHC's new Housing Affordability Index is out, here's some key takeaways: 💲 It shows that any improvements that we've seen in rents and home costs over the last several months are not the return to affordability that some have claimed. 1/ buff.ly/I9cIEFs

“The social acceptance of the Broadway Plan, and the pretty major redevelopment that’s going to happen as a result, depends on these policies working as they’re meant to work." @ubcHART Dr. Craig Jones comments on the tenant protection policies buff.ly/WcYHMSI

CMHC's data tracking vacancy rates by rent shows us what many renters experience: higher vacancy (and the falling rents that often accompany them) are concentrated in the most expensive units. For the vast majority of people in need, there's no relief. buff.ly/FmwDTEd

Community note: this intersection is a 5 minute walk from a major skytrain station, a main street full of shops, restaurants, and community space, and a mall that would all significantly benefit from the additional residents. buff.ly/P6qQhtS

Small, multi-family housing is an absolutely necessary salve to a painful crisis of housing affordability. Some municipal governments regularly reject desperately needed housing in their communities because of a lopsided community engagement model. buff.ly/F7omDpj

The model of suburban-style living in within city limits is both outdated and expensive - single family homes cost more to service, they often have more cars per home, and they contribute far less to their communities per sq ft than multi-family #housing. #canpoli #onpoli

The philosophy "growth pays for growth" completely ignores the facts that 1. EVERYONE benefits from improved infrastructure; 2. Improved infrastructure and amenities could improve property values for existing homes; 3. We are in a housing crisis. buff.ly/PEkSmM2

A reminder that we are allowing people to be evicted into homelessness on a scale that has never been documented before. Getting someone out of homelessness is much harder and more expensive than stopping them from becoming homeless in the first place. buff.ly/BOQf28J
