🧑‍🎓✨ Huge congratulations to UCD Mathematics student Mhyls Salapuddin, a recipient of this year’s prestigious Hamilton Prize, the top honour for undergraduate mathematical students in Ireland. Mhyls, now in the final year of a BSc in Mathematics at UCD Science, was among nine students recognised by The Royal Irish Academy for outstanding mathematical excellence. The ceremony took place at the Royal Irish Academy on Thursday, 16 October 2025. The date marked the anniversary of famed Irish scientist William Rowan Hamilton’s discovery of quaternion algebra on 16 October 1843. “As a maths graduate, I know how far maths can take you. It opens doors to research, finance, teaching, economics, and politics,” said James Lawless TD, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, who delivered the keynote address at the ceremony. “Mathematics is central to Ireland’s success. Our fastest-growing industries, including artificial intelligence, renewable energy, medtech, financial services, and data analytics, all depend on strong maths skills. These awards recognise the discipline and talent of the next generation of Irish mathematicians.” This year’s prize was presented by the 2025 Hamilton Speaker, Nobel Laureate Professor Kip Thorne. Professor Thorne was awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize for his contributions to the study of gravitational waves. In recognition of their mathematical excellence, each student received a cash prize and a certificate of achievement.

🌊🧑‍🎓 "There is a real pressure on us to raise our game." Ireland has committed to protecting 30% of its waters by 2030 under the UN biodiversity framework, aimed at halting species decline and restoring marine ecosystems. However, while endangered basking sharks wash up dead off the coast of Clare and other EU states progress with protected zones, Ireland has yet to pass the legislation needed to establish and enforce Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). In 2019, a government-convened expert group recommended the establishment of new laws to create MPAs. Its chair, UCD Vice-President for Sustainability, Professor Tasman Crowe, is disappointed that the legislation has yet to be enacted, given the urgent challenges Ireland faces. @UCDsustain @UCDEarth @UCD_SDG #SDGWeek

A new study published in @ScienceMagazine warns that bees, bumblebees & butterflies need much more space for pollinator recovery than is currently stipulated in EU directives. Led by @WUR , the study is co-authored by Assoc Prof @DaraStanley the research underlines that habitat quality also needs to be taken into account. Assoc. Professor Dara Stanley said, “"Pollinators are important for the production of 75% crops globally, and the reproduction of over 90% of our wild plants. Our current targets of having 10% natural habitat on farmland are not enough to ensure their conservation". Read more at: ucd.ie/research/news/…
