July 11th, 2026 Spotlight Player OTD: Dave Hoppen Hoppen played 169 games (six years) in the NBA — 136 of them were with the Charlotte Hornets. Most notably, with the expansion Charlotte Hornets in 1988. He was taken in the expansion draft from Golden State as Charlotte’s second expansion pick (4th overall) after Dell Curry (2nd overall). Hoppen would start 36 games that ‘88-‘89 season… which would blow out any other year he played in the league. Hoppen also played in 77 games total for Dick Harter and the expansion Hornets, which was more than double the amount of games played during his 2nd-place season for games played (36). Hoppen was a part of Harter’s center-by-committee rotation at the 5 spot in year one alongside the likes of Kurt Rambis, Tim Kempton, and Earl Cureton. Interestingly enough about Hoppen, his place in Charlotte inevitably led the Kenny Gattison being a part of the Hornets: In December of 1989, just under two months into Charlotte’s second NBA season, Hoppen got injured. One Kenny Gattison was signed, and was initially added to soley be an injury replacement for Hoppen. Following Gattison’s debut, he told the Charlotte Post, “I really wasn’t thinking about Charlotte.” “I knew they had their roster set, and just about everybody was guaranteed (contracts). If it wasn’t for Hop getting injured, I wouldn’t be here.” Thought that was super interesting, and I may have even mentioned it in the Gattison Spotlight. Hoppen also had an interesting career at Nebraska (his hometown is legitimately Omaha, too) where he took them to the postseason all four years he was there: Hoppen and Nebraska won two NIT tournaments and made it to the Dance twice, but were knocked out in the Rof32 both times they got there. He’s viewed as legitimately one of the best basketball players in the history of the university. Hoppen’s number is retired at Pinnacle Bank Arena (#42, his @ is literally @Husker42) where Nebraska plays and is still the school’s all-time leading scorer. It was hard to find much on him with Charlotte, but in an interview with the Cornhusker website in 2017, Hoppen said this of his NBA career: “As far as my post-NU career, I would say getting to play in the Boston Garden and being on the same floor as (Larry) Bird, (Kevin) McHale, (Robert) Parrish and (Danny) Ainge was memorable. I wanted to get their autographs as much as I wanted to compete against them. I had the opportunity to play with and against some of the greatest players of all time, and it was amazing…Kareem, Magic, Hakeem, Ewing, Barkley, Jordan, etc. I was out of my league but it was still fun.” I have some newspapers of Hoppen below:
