Let me introduce the racehorse Ines Fujin. 🏇 His career record stands at 8 starts and 4 wins, including 2 GⅠ victories. He is particularly famous for his partnership with jockey Nakano, with whom he won the 1990 Japanese Derby. From the time he was a foal, he had a very friendly disposition and a hearty appetite. With his impressive physique, expectations for him were high. The jockey who became Ines Fujin’s regular rider was Eiji Nakano. He wasn’t particularly well-known in the racing world, and at the time, he was on the verge of retirement due to weight-loss struggles that had reduced his riding opportunities. It was then that an offer to ride Ines Fujin happened to come his way. This fateful encounter occurred because, in addition to being quietly regarded by stable staff as a jockey with excellent riding skills, his trainer, Shuho Kato, was known for his philosophy of giving jockeys opportunities. It took three races to secure his first victory, but the team confidently chose the GⅠ Asahi Hai 3-Year-Old Stakes for his next start. Though it seemed reckless, he clocked a time that matched the record held by Maruzensky to claim victory and secure his first GⅠ title, much to the surprise of racing fans. Furthermore, this race marked the first GⅠ victory for both jockey Nakano and trainer Kato. Ines Fujin suddenly emerged as a strong contender for the Classics, but in her first Classic race, the Satsuki Sho, she made contact with another horse immediately after the start, which cost her the win and she finished second. Although some media outlets called for a change of jockey, trainer Kato declared, “The loss in the Satsuki Sho wasn’t Nakano’s fault; I’m not replacing Nakano,” and simply told Nakano, “Let’s definitely win the Derby.” In an interview before the Derby, Nakano addressed the pre-race betting odds and declared, “Please make Ines Fujin the favorite. It’s my dream to win the Derby as the favorite. I’m confident.” In the end, Ines Fujin was the third favorite on Derby Day, at which point Nakano reportedly said, “I want to make Ines Fujin the favorite—even if I have to go into debt to do it.” In the subsequent Japanese Derby, he took the lead immediately after the start and set an astonishingly fast pace. In the final stretch, he completely shut out Mejiro Ryan—the only horse to challenge him—and secured a magnificent victory with a blistering run that shaved a full second off the Derby record. At the time, Japan was in the midst of a horse racing boom, and the number of spectators gathered at Tokyo Racecourse that day reached 196,517—a figure that remains a world record to this day. Having given it his all, Ines Fujin was so exhausted after crossing the finish line that he couldn’t take a single step; jockey Nakano therefore guided him slowly back along the track to the weigh-in. There, the huge crowd spontaneously broke into a loud chant of “Nakano” for Ines Fujin and jockey Nakano. It is said that this Derby marked the origin of the tradition of chanting to celebrate winning horses and jockeys in Japanese horse racing, and is also regarded as the moment when modern horse racing transformed from gambling into a sport. Subsequently, an injury was discovered in Ines Fujin’s left front leg, and unfortunately, he was forced to retire. Among horse racing fans, when discussing legendary horses said to have “burned out” in the Derby, Ines Fujin’s name is sometimes mentioned. After his retirement, he lived out his days as a stud in Miyagi Prefecture and passed away in 2004 at the age of 17. Many fans continued to visit him until the end of his life, and it seems Ines Fujin remained as friendly as ever. #umamusume

Let me introduce the racehorse Yaeno Muteki. 🏇 His career record stands at 23 starts and 8 wins, including 2 GⅠ victories. He was also known for having a difficult temperament; from a young age, he was extremely aggressive and would bully other foals, so he had to be kept in isolation during pasture time. Although his debut was delayed due to leg issues, he won his debut race in a landslide and followed it up with a second consecutive victory, instantly establishing himself as a strong contender for the Classic races. His camp had set their sights on the Satsuki Sho, but since he lacked the necessary prize money, they entered him in the Mainichi Hai to boost his earnings. However, he was defeated by Oguri Cap, a national star who had come up from the regional circuits. Although he was unable to increase his prize money, he was fortunate enough to secure a spot in the Satsuki Sho through the draw. He won the Satsuki Sho as the ninth favorite, achieving his first GⅠ victory. Although he was unable to win the subsequent Classic Triple Crown races—the Japanese Derby and the Kikuka Sho—perhaps because the distances were too long for him, he still posted an impressive record that year, with six wins and one second-place finish in ten starts. From the following year onward, star horses like Oguri Cap—who had spearheaded the horse racing boom of that era—dominated the scene, and Yaeno Muteki, unfortunately, struggled to secure a victory. However, after a string of narrow defeats, he finally set a course record in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) to claim his second GⅠ victory. The Arima Kinen was chosen as his final race, but as fate would have it, that year’s Arima Kinen also marked the end of the road for Oguri Cap, and crowds of spectators flocked to the track to cheer on the star horse’s final race. Meanwhile, Yaeno Muteki’s temper got the better of him, and he threw his jockey off before the race even began. And while the whole of Japan was abuzz over Oguri Cap’s miraculous final race, he finished in seventh place and retired. He showed his fans just how wild he was right up until the very end. Although a retirement ceremony was planned in recognition of his impressive record of two GⅠ wins, there is an anecdote that his team declined the offer because his temperament was simply too unpredictable. #umamusume

Let me introduce the racehorse Nishino Flower. 🏇 Her career record stands at 7 wins from 16 starts, including 3 GⅠ victories. She was born at Nishiyama Stud, known for its "Nishino" and "Seiun" prefixes. At that time, Nishiyama Stud was struggling with poor results and had shifted to a "quality over quantity" policy as a means of reform. Nishino Flower’s dam, Duplicit, was also imported from the United States as part of this reform. Although she had been small and slender since she was a foal and didn’t particularly stand out, she made her debut at age two and quickly racked up consecutive wins, claiming her first GⅠ victory in the Hanshin 3-Year-Old Fillies Stakes and earning the title of JRA Award for Best 3-Year-Old Filly. It was also the first GⅠ victory for jockey Sato, who was in the saddle. However, despite being the overwhelming favorite in the Tulip Sho—the race she was selected for next—she finished second. Jockey Sato felt deeply responsible for the loss and told her trainer, “This is too much for me to handle.” From that point on, he never rode Nishino Flower again, and the reins were handed over to Jockey Kawachi, a top jockey from the Kansai region. She went on to win the Oka Sho (1,600 meters), the first leg of the Fillies’ Triple Crown, in convincing fashion, but finished seventh in the Oaks (2,400 meters) and, despite a strong effort, came in third in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2,400 meters). Consequently, her team chose the GⅠ Sprinters’ Stakes—a mixed race against older horses—to cap off the season. Nishino Flower defeated top colts such as Daitaku Helios and Yamanin Zephyr to claim her third GⅠ victory. That year, she went 2-for-6 with two GⅠ wins and was named Best 4-Year-Old Filly and Best Sprinter. She subsequently became a broodmare in 1994 and produced a total of 11 foals. Seven of those 11 foals won races on the national circuit, achieving outstanding results. In 2022, Nishino Daisy—a great-grandchild of Nishino Flower and Seiun Sky—won the Nakayama Grand Jump, marking the first GⅠ victory for her lineage. After retiring from breeding, she spent her remaining years at Nishiyama Stud as a horse of merit and enjoyed good health for a long time, but in 2020, her owner announced on his blog that she had passed away at the age of 31 due to old age. Her grave was erected next to that of Seiun Sky, who had also supported Nishiyama Stud. The tombstone is inscribed with the words: "In gratitude to the great mare who went from being a child prodigy to a great mother and saved the Nishiyama Stud." #umamusume
