One thing that can make human relationships easier is understanding temperaments. When you take time to study how different people are wired, you begin to understand why they behave the way they do. This understanding helps you communicate better, avoid unnecessary conflict, and relate with people more effectively.
Psychology identifies four major temperaments, and they are grouped into two broad categories:
Extroverted temperaments
Sanguine
Choleric
Introverted temperaments
Melancholic
Phlegmatic
Interestingly, most people are not just one temperament. Many people are a combination of two or sometimes three. When someone has two temperaments, one is usually dominant (primary) while the other becomes the secondary temperament.
The combinations can vary.
For example:
A Sanguine–Choleric combination means the person has two extroverted temperaments. Such a person is usually very expressive, energetic, and strongly extroverted.
A Sanguine–Melancholic combination mixes an extroverted and an introverted temperament. This kind of person may sometimes appear outgoing, yet still have deep reflective or reserved tendencies.
So while we may be born with certain temperamental tendencies, our environment, upbringing, and experiences can also shape how those temperaments are expressed.
Understanding these differences helps us become more patient with people. Instead of asking “Why is this person like this?”, we begin to realize that people simply process life differently.
And when we understand that, living and working with others becomes much easier.
