𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐉𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐉𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 Every successful journey begins with a decision: to take the first step. The Congolese Christian Refugee Community in Katwe, made up of 80% women and 20% men, is demonstrating that financial growth begins with faith, discipline, and intentional planning. Before every savings meeting, members come together in prayer, dedicating their work to God and seeking His guidance before making financial decisions. Our Relationship Manager – Deposits, Alice Matama, together with other members of the UGAFODE Microfinance team, had the opportunity to conduct a financial literacy session focused on budgeting and financial planning. Members of the group operate a variety of small businesses, including tailoring shops, retail shops, restaurants, and other small enterprises. Opening the session, Alice challenged the participants with a simple but powerful question: "𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫. 𝐈𝐟 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐤𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐤, 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 10 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬?" She encouraged them to think beyond their present circumstances, adding: "𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘫𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘸. 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵." Alice explained that saving is not just about putting money aside; it is a journey of discipline, patience, and purpose. Every amount saved, no matter how small, brings you one step closer to achieving your goals and creates opportunities for future investment and business growth. She encouraged members to develop short-term, medium-term, and long-term financial plans, emphasizing that every goal requires a clear roadmap. Alice then introduced the 𝐉𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐉𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞, a simple budgeting approach that helps people manage their money wisely by dividing their income into different purposes, including daily needs, savings, investment, giving, and personal spending. The principle teaches that every shilling should have a purpose. She further explained that a budget is simply a list of your income and your expenses. When you know where your money comes from and where it goes, you are better able to save, invest, and achieve your financial goals.

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐔𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚’𝐬 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? UGAFODE Microfinace Limited (MDI) was started in 1994 as a nongovernmental organisation (NGO) with the name The Uganda Agency for Development Limited (UGAFODE). The NGO aimed at providing affordable financial services to customers, who were mainly women provided with group credit. In September 2010, UGAFODE Microfinance Limited was incorporated as a company limited by shares and in September 2011, it transformed into an MDI (Micro-deposit taking institution) with new savings products to balance credit operations and expanded shareholding. The NGO divested from microfinance activities, but retained an ownership share. It transferred all its business, assets and liabilities to UGAFODE Microfinance Limited. The institution was licensed as a Tier III MDI by The Central Bank of Uganda (BoU) in 2011.
