@AllenCulver1 I think @FH2TV misinterpreted the "59.94" number as bandwidth i.e. datarate/bitrate in Mbit/sec (Mbps) but it's the framerate – the fractional frame rate of 60Hz.

Broadcasters covering the #2026WorldCup will be able to receive a 2160p HLG (i.e. 4K HDR) feed at 59.94 that they may convert to 50p, so great news!

@diarchtct @giannirig Most of the world runs at 50Hz, except for a handful of countries in the western hemisphere that use 60Hz. The advent of the internet has had no impact on this whatsoever.

@giannirig @UHD4k 50 was the standard before the internet, now 60 is the standard. Given TVs are all 60 or 120Hz, 50fps would be a terrible choice.

@YNWA_4Life I suspect it's the resources needed for iPlayer software development, which is difficult because of the enormous fragmentation of the device market with over 10 different OS/middleware platforms for Smart TVs and streaming media players.

@UHD4k I don't believe they are anywhere near as poor as they claim. Feeding through a multi-channel PCM audio feed isn't costly at all. It's a few clicks of the encoder; after all - the incoming feed from the IBC is already passing them exactly that.

@user1900_ It's the "NTSC" frame rate, even if it's digital, non-interlaced and even 4K. It's the fractional frame rate for 60Hz, 0.1% lower to avoid cross-talk, in case you'd like to read more about it and could use some terms for searching. Sorry for not being more clear in the 1st tweet.

@UHD4k Bad news 60fps master, why? Just bc it's hosted in NA doesn't mean they should impose their standard. The whole world uses 50 and they're gonna watch the WC much more than Americans. Most international broadcasts use 50, conversion isn't ideal.

@HarryBarnes @KMast77K @Fredsterface I don't recall ITV ever doing anything in 4K, or HDR for that matter. This was particularly disappointing with those tournaments where matches were split between BBC and ITV, where the former made 4K HDR available and the latter had nothing to show beyond HD-ready SDR.
