@Freund_B_ There's nothing wrong with character art. The opening was solo animated by Kazuto Nakazawa and the drawings look great as expected. That's not the issue.

AI generated backgrounds in the opening of the new Ascendance of a Bookworm season. Very unfortunate.

@Theleux_ It has happened before, too. One episode of the new Monogatari season also had AI backgrounds provided by an outsourcing studio. There was a case of dubious looking backgrounds in Kaiju no. 8 as well, but we got no confirmation for that one.

@ukloim Ah I saw your followup, outsourced BG work. Surprised this wasn't noticed before completion.

Mind you, there's no way to know who's at fault here. The production is obviously handled by Wit, but the backgrounds in the opening were outsourced to a Vietnamese studio Nam Hai Art.
