@C0PE Situation: an author has been demoted and raised this informally and then formally. The PI & institution took no action for over 6 months except to say it was being investigated. While the investigation was pending, the institution published a pre-print version. They then sought to have the paper published while failing to investigate the outstanding research misconduct complaint. The original author then complained directly to the EIC who worked with the institution to send a time limited ultimatum to the original author that would circumvent the independent assessment requested by the original author in line with @UKRIO. Q1) Which @C0PE guideline suggests such an ultimatum as an appropriate tool by publishers? Q2) Which @C0PE guidelines suggest rushing to publish without allowing the research misconduct allegations to be properly investigated? The institution falsely claimed that the author did not engage with the authorship ultimatum. In fact the author had repeatedly restated their request for "a fair and independent assessment of the content and relative contributions of authors." The request the institution had ignored for >6 months. The publisher proceeded to publish on the basis of the false claim by the institution and refused to reconsider when the false claim was disputed. Q3) Is it usual for publishers to rely on outright lies in determining their decisions? Q4) The publisher claims they asked the original author for their input during an investigation but they did not do so. Is this in line with @C0PE guidelines? #ResearchMisconduct #ContentIntegrity #academia #AcademicResearch
