The human body has lessons to teach all of us in medicine. As a hematopathologist, I’m especially partial to the bone marrow. During my 2026 commencement keynote at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, I shared how the marrow models attentiveness, responsiveness, connectedness, adaptability, and resilience in ways that medicine should never forget. #UMichPath's Dr. Navin R. Mahadevan and his colleague Dr. David Barbie (@DanaFarber) used high-resolution spatial mapping and a “tumor-on-a-chip” model that mimics SCLC tumors and their surrounding blood vessels. What they found: the real barrier isn’t the immune cells, it’s the tumor’s own vasculature, acting as a closed gate that keeps NK cells stuck in the bloodstream and out of the tumor. 🔬 Hands-on learning in action! On March 24, #UMichPath and @UMichKidney teamed up to host a lab experience for the U-M KDSAP students. With guidance from U-M Path faculty Evan Farkash, MD, PhD, pathology resident Sara Tweedy, MD, PhD, and Nephrology Fellow, Atlee Brown, MD, students rolled up their sleeves to dissect sheep kidneys, perform core needle biopsies, and create their own H&E-stained slides.
