Alhaji Aminu Dantata might not be a name known to many outside of Africa, but he was a shining star and legendary icon to the people of Nigeria. I was honored to know him and his family during my childhood, and met him recently in my last visit to Nigeria. As one of the most successful entrepreneurs and business tycoons in Africa, Allah blessed him with immense wealth, and fame and power; yet everyone knew him to be a humble and honest man, and a philanthropist of the highest level: ever-ready to help others less fortunate, never greedy for more. He turned down political office, he never was accused of any scandal, he was ever-beloved to his people, and indeed entire country... Such men are very rare indeed! In my visit to him a few months ago, I asked him for advice. He said, "Honesty! Always, be truthful and sincere, and leave the rest to Allah." At the end of our conversation, he remarked, "I am ready to leave this world, and looking forward to return to my Creator." He returned to his Lord at the ripe age of 93, and was buried today in the blessed cemetery of Baqi al-Gharqad, in Madinah. May Allah forgive his sins and exalt his ranks and allow his progeny after him to continue his legacy!!
