International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination calls on all of us to confront and address racism in its many forms- individual, institutional, and systemic. It is a moment to reflect on the persistence of racial discrimination and our collective responsibility to challenge it. Racism continues to shape how people move through our schools, workplaces, and communities, impacting who feels safe, who is heard, and who is able to fully belong. Belonging is not a given. it is shaped by the presence or absence of justice. This year, we invite you into a deeper conversation. In recognition of this day, and rooted in the themes of Trayces, the UNB Human Rights and Equity Office, in partnership with the UNB Art Centre, brings together storytelling and lived experiences to explore identity, cultural histories, and the realities that shape belonging. This panel offers a space to listen, reflect, and engage with what it takes to build communities grounded in dignity, accountability, and care. Together, we will reflect on how our stories shape who we are, how belonging is cultivated or constrained, and what it takes to build dignity and belonging across difference. Panel Discussion: The Art of Belonging Date: Mar 21, 2:30–4:30 PM (Snow date: Mar 28, 2:30-4:30PM) Location: UNB Art Centre, East Gallery, Memorial Hall Register here ➡️ bit.ly/3P75mf4

As we prepare for a new era at UNB, we’re looking back at the progress made during Dr. Paul J. Mazerolle’s presidency to expand the university’s research impact across New Brunswick and around the world. Over the past seven years, UNB has strengthened its research capacity in meaningful ways: we have welcomed 19 new research chairs, launched new research institutes, invested in state‑of‑the‑art labs and built partnerships that support industry innovation, community resilience, improved health care and evidence‑informed public policy. This growth has transformed student learning, providing hands‑on opportunities in labs, communities and industry settings where students contribute to real‑world solutions and launch meaningful careers here in New Brunswick. Today, as we mark International Women’s Day, we reflect on the progress made toward gender equity and the work that still lies ahead. The experiences, leadership and research contributions of women at UNB and within our global alumni community continue to shape our university and strengthen our communities. As a university community, we each play a part in fostering a more equitable and inclusive future. Learning together, challenging assumptions and engaging in thoughtful dialogue are essential steps in strengthening our understanding and deepening our commitment to equity. 🌎

Last week, UNB's Vice President Research, Dr. David MaGee, participated in an important funding announcement for seven projects that will help strengthen the forest sectors in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. One project will see UNB researchers, led by Dr. Meng Gong, design and construct a small container‑style home using prefabricated components made from innovative mass‑timber products and light‑frame wall systems. The major materials are 2x3 lumber as structural elements and wood fibers as insulation. The ultimate goal of this project is to utilize decommissioned buildings to create an affordable transitional shelter community. The project will also assess the environmental impact of the structure from material extraction to the end‑of‑life of a repurposed building. Paired with a detailed life‑cycle cost analysis, this research will offer a comprehensive view of the long‑term sustainability and affordability of this approach. This work demonstrates how home‑grown wood products can support low‑carbon, high‑value building solutions. Thank you to the Government of Canada for recognizing the value of this research and for supporting UNB’s efforts to lead innovation in sustainable construction. Read more ➡️ bit.ly/4bdOD13

As we look ahead to a new chapter at UNB, we’re reflecting on the progress made during Dr. Paul J. Mazerolle’s presidency to help create a more inclusive, supportive and equitable community. Over the past seven years, UNB has taken meaningful steps forward—raising Indigenous flags on campus, designating smudge‑friendly spaces, creating and developing Wabanaki Healing Gardens, supporting Indigenous and African diaspora graduates with cultural stoles, expanding human rights and equity education, and more. These initiatives reflect our commitment to building a people‑centred university where every member of our community feels a sense of belonging. Read more about this important work ➡ bit.ly/3PbXWqO

NASA’s Artemis II mission is expected to begin its journey around the moon this year, and UNB is thrilled to be tracking the Orion spacecraft! NASA has selected UNB as one of only three Canadian contributors helping to track Orion during its 10‑day moon mission. Our involvement brings together the expertise of #CubeSatNB, the department of electrical & computer engineering, the department of geodesy and geomatics engineering and the UNB Earth Station—a powerhouse team supporting hands‑on learning and research in satellite communications. As part of a global network of academic partners, commercial providers and volunteer stations, UNB will help passively track Orion’s radio signals on its voyage and orbit of the moon, contributing real data to a historic mission. Artemis II marks NASA’s first crewed mission to the moon in over 50 years. Four astronauts will launch aboard the Space Launch System rocket, travel around the moon in Orion, and return to Earth. They will test critical life‑support, navigation and communication systems to pave the way for future lunar exploration. 🔭 Want to learn more? As Black History Month comes to an end, we’re sharing a powerful reflection from UNB digital content writer and student, Tife Aribisala. Tife grew up in Nigeria, where Blackness was never something she needed to name. Moving to Canada changed that. “For the first time, I felt my skin before I felt myself,” she said. That shift has reshaped how she understands herself. Her story is an honest exploration of identity, how it moves, shifts and sometimes asks us to see ourselves differently. We invite you to read Tife’s full piece as we continue to celebrate Black Brilliance ➡️ bit.ly/4r1nFzw
