This is why the people saying "We just have to trust that our GP knows what they're doing." are a loss - a healthy doctor/patient relationship includes *both* parties being proactive and receptive.

I know doctors cringe when their patients say they've "done their research on the internet" about their treatment, but on three occasions a doctor has recommended or given me supplements etc that one minute of googling revealed to have no studied effects beyond placebo.

And you wouldn't trust a plumber who wanted to replace your pipes with lead or a mechanic who wanted to cap your exhaust pipe either - you'd say "I'm neither a pro nor a conspiracy guy, but I have enough reliable info on the dangers there to need a second opinion."

@JohnDiesattheEn The older I get the more I realize going to the doctor/dentist is a lot like going to a mechanic or a plumber you don't know. You just have to hope whatever treatment plan they rush you through is actually good for you.

People cannot spend decades whining that it's unfair to expect doctors to know every possible combo of symptoms, side-effects and med interactions, and then continue whining that it's unfair to outsource the field of diagnostic medicine to A.I.s. Though they will.

@everyvote_prize @JohnDiesattheEn this is why ultimately complex diagnostic/prescription assistance software is going to become standard in primary healthcare. And probably a first line of someone with a few years training on diagnostics/software will end up being better than a full GP at appropriate diagnosis.

@everyvote_prize @JohnDiesattheEn No we don't - we expect them to LISTEN to us when we give first-hand descriptions of years of symptoms they studied for two days in preMed, or when they insist a prescription has no side-effects/addictive potential despite exhaustive accredited online resources saying otherwise.

@JohnDiesattheEn I feel bad for doctors…we expect them to be continuously up to date learning machines (or have time to do research for each patient). Yes, they get paid a lot of money, but even still, I think we expect a level of expertise that’s unrealistic.

It's literally your life on the line - doctors routinely dismiss serious symptoms, prevent proper treatment, or prescribe meds while ignorant of the well-documented side-effects and risks. They're a resource to get proactive with, not a cure-all to blindly trust.

It’s just self protection….the anxiety that provokes is more than my concern I’m being ripped off. I’m not sure what to do about our decent into a low trust society.
