Every child that has to go to a substandard school is a child whose human rights are abused. Every person who doesn’t have social security or social support or the chance to get a decent job or a decent standard of living—that’s an abuse of their rights, and it’s a threat to the development of democracy.
Carolyn Gomes, #Jamaican Human Rights Activist born 68 years ago today on 30 Mar 1958. With other concerned citizens, in response to human rights abuses, founded Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) in 1999. It was established to advocate for justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights in the country.

@Gordonswaby @TwiddersGad This is true… I mixed up the 25th the Thursday with Friday and I was literally placed in lock up… the police did the paper work and I appeared in court!!!! Mind you The holding area had mostly transport ppl … I was placed beside the cops, not in the “cell”
English

@TwiddersGad It’s automatic now bredda. You miss your court date the warrant is being automatically issued; that’s my point. The game has changed
English

For the people that don’t know. Currently, in Jamaica. If you get a traffic ticket (any traffic ticket, even for MINOR infractions) and you don’t pay it and you don’t attend court, shortly after a warrant will be issued for your arrest (this has now gotten easier and can now be done electronically end to end) and you will be arrested and jailed.
This can happen to you whether you’re rich or poor. The only difference is that the rich and connected have resources to make this process less painful.
My suggestion is NO court for some infractions and a penalty/interest IF you don’t pay after the 21 days or whatever stipulated period.
The current system treats us all like criminals regardless of the infraction and you’ll be in the jail with the murderer for failing to pay your seat belt ticket.
Gordon Swaby@Gordonswaby
Ooops, you forgot to use your turn signal or wear a seat belt. Sorry, you’re now a criminal! #Jamaica

@DrewOnline @Gordonswaby The old lady of north street 🙆🏿♂️
English

The Gleaner is moving from North Street to the RJR/TVJ HQ. Wow, what a major move.
So much history tied up at North Street, including for me. Every other Saturday for years, I would travel from Christiana -> Mandeville-> Parade -> North Street and back for Youthlink.
I made many friends and learned many lessons in that building, but I get it.
The only thing constant in life is change.
Wishing RJRGleaner well.
