Notice anything different about the Old Library from this photo? The downstairs reading room wasn't created until the 1930s; before then the library had one large reading room. The bookcases are the same ones in use today, with their beautiful botanical carvings. #univlibrary

Our annual poetry competition is now LIVE for all Univ members! 🖊 We welcome submissions of all forms of poetry, on any topic. You can submit your entry (or entries, no more than 3 per person) via email. The closing date is Friday 6th March. #universitycollegeoxford

In our Library office we have the plinth for the Alfred bust (in the Old Library), showing that the Alfred foundation myth was still alive in the 1770s.Resting on top is a gavel reputed to be used to hammer on staircases to wake sleeping students up, as recently as last century!

When we are putting on exhibitions and displays, we sometimes get curious glances at a box labelled 'snakes'. We use 'snake weights' to keep books open so we can display individual pages without damaging them. 🐍 #toolsofmytrade #universitycollegeoxford
