Not all red seaweeds are red, but they all have a special ability to store sugars in their cells that other seaweeds can't. One example is 𝘒𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘷𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘻𝘪𝘪: a major source of carrageenan, a polysaccharide that is used in a variety of commercial products.

Where do some of our white sand beaches come from? 🌿𝘏𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘢 spp. are green seaweeds that contain plenty of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃). When they die, their bodies break down into fine white sand. Read more: facebook.com/share/p/1HbWL2…
