Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso built two state universities, one of which was the first state-owned university in Northern Nigeria. Thousands of young people from poor backgrounds graduated from these institutions, and today they are employed and living better lives because of the opportunity they received. But what has Atiku Abubakar done? He established the American University of Nigeria, a school that an average poor person cannot afford. Despite that, Kwankwaso sponsored some underprivileged students to study there for free, and many of them are now working with the qualifications they obtained from that university. Some Northerners are being influenced to believe that Atiku is their solution. Yet, there is little to point to as a clear contribution from Atiku Abubakar that has directly improved the lives of ordinary people in the region. In the opinion of some, there is not much difference between Atiku and Bola Ahmed Tinubu, although this is a topic that often sparks intense political debate. I can give over a hundred examples like this where Kwankwaso has contributed more to the development of Northern Nigeria than Atiku.

Malam Nasir El-Rufai architected this entire coalition of these powerful men and notable figures, with no ambition for himself. You are positioning yourself against a sitting president from the South who still has four years left to complete an expected eight-year tenure. At the same time, you have publicly committed to serving only one term if elected and handing over to RMK. Furthermore, if your joint ticket with RMK does not succeed, you would then be expected, by your own logic and the prevailing political arrangement, to support him in 2031, when it would be the North’s turn to produce the president. In practical terms, this means you have effectively narrowed your own window to just one real opportunity: 2027. That is the hard truth. You are, by your own design, placing a strict limit on your political lifespan at the very moment it should be expanding. Politics at this level is not just about ambition, it is about timing, structure, and long-term positioning. By locking yourself into these commitments, you risk stepping out of the race earlier than necessary. If this is a deliberate strategy, then it is a bold one. But if not, then it deserves a deeper reflection.
