Firstly, he's very technically proficient: • he has great breath control (try rap the first half of his verse in HYFR or the last quarter of his verse in Only You Freestyle without losing your breath). • his punchlines are very witty and memorable ("Artists hittin' on you, broke as fuck, I swear them niggas probably live in Singapore" is a hilarious bar). • he has impeccable timing and rhythm. • he's extremely versatile (infinite flows, can rap on any beat). • he has exceptional delivery (confident tone, commanding presence). I could go on and on about Drake's technical prowess. But I think what makes him better than everyone else is how he makes the audience feel. You can go watch a Power 106 freestyle if you want a quick fix of a rapper doing lyrical gymnastics. Ultimately, what sticks with an audience is how you pulled at their emotions. Drake is so good at being vulnerable and introspective. And probably his best skill is his ability to condense a very relatable experience and word it to us in a way we'd never thought of before, but makes so much sense. That's why he's the caption king. People live with his lyrics and use them to process events. This particular skill keeps him relevant and makes his rivals extremely jealous, because most of them can't do that, no matter how many quadruple entendres they come up with. Drake isn't complicated. He's simple, yet effective, like a sharp knife that doesn't dull. And that's why, no matter how intense the controversy may be, people always end up coming back to him. He just gets the job done.
